My dd was born at 30 weeks and is now 19 months... thye tried to give my husband the flumist instead of the flu shot (he had a cold so they couldn't give it to him), last time he got the flumist he was sick for a week and we were told that he couldn't be around our daughter for 5 days after the he got it. We were also told that if we get th H1N1 that we have to get the nasel virson and I am worried about being around her after having it. We disinfect everything and wash our hands alot and don't let strangers around her either. Is her lil immune system normal yet? or should we still consider it easier for her to get things?

With a lot of preemies it isn't so much that their immune systems sucks(although in some it does)...it's that the rest of their body sucks (lol...I mean lungs for example). It's the complications from getting sick that are a major concern (the same with H1N1). If my daughter (27 weeker, now 22mos) gets a cold, it's not that she gets it any easier than any other toddler, it's just that hers will probably end up in her lungs and cause pneumonia or bronchiolitis (both of which she has had from getting colds). You do NOT have to get the mist for flu shots or H1N1, health departments should offer you a choice. This year we are still putting ourselves on lockdown from most of the world. I realize it is good for her to be exposed to germs and build up her immunity, but I am still so scared of dealing with pneumonia and stuff again this winter...giving a toddler a breathing treatment is NOT easy!

My son is 17 months and I know his immune system still sucks! He has things like asthma which make it easier for him to catch colds too, but I would still be cautious. Better safe than sorry and there is no harm in being cautious. :D
