My Micro is now 23 months old and she is only 20lbs. I know she is little and we get all the extra help GI and OT. I was just wondering how far off she is compared to other Micro's. She was a 26 weeker 1lb 6oz and 12in long. She is almost 33in tall now.

My son was a 25 weeker- 1lb 10oz, 13 in long. He is now 19 months and is 19lbs 12oz and 32.5in tall now. He is on pediasure to help him try and gain weight. He does not really eat table food( he is really funny about textures), so he is mostly on baby food still ( stage 2) I try to get him to eat table food when i can, but that is a work in progress. His nutritionist is wanting him to gain more weight though. My thought is.... he may be small but he is healthy, she will have to get over it.

My 17 week daughter was a 24 week preemie, 1 lb 3 oz and 11.5 inches. We are still on the short side, 18 inches but is now 6lb and 14 oz.

My son was born at 29 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. He is now 17 1/2 months old and a few weeks ago he was 22 lbs 13 oz. But as long as your child is growing... i wouldn't worry about his size!

my micropreemie Amelia was born at 24weeks, 1lb 7oz 12in long. She is now 16 months and weighs 22lbs 13oz. She was on a special high calorie formula since in the hospital (wasnt able to bf) then on her 1st birthday we had to add pediasure which is also high calorie. She just got put on full cows milk thursday which i'm thrilled about because that formula and pediasure isn't the cheapest! lol. She is in the 25th percentile.

Hi Carie~
I must congratulate you on your little miracle as we all have one. My daughter Emily was born at 24 weeks weighing 1lb. 2 oz. and 12 inches long. Our constent struggle has been her digestive track and her bronchials/lungs. Emily is now 5 years old and weights 30 lbs. She is tall but super skinny never succeeded in plumping her up all failed. So just be patient with your little one she will get there when she is ready. I was told from her ped. to try and not compare her, she is special in her own way and eventually will catch up by the time she hits 5. Emily wears size 3 in shirts and 5 in pants but have to fold at the bottom and tuck in at the waist. If she wears 4 shes wearing high waters. Just be patient because it is hard not wanting to compare specially if its your first daughter.
Take care and best wishes.

Hi Carie,
Our daughter was 2lbs 2ozs when she was born. She is now 8 months old and weighs a little over 12lbs. Do you still nurse?? Do you make your own food??
I now fomula feed after 6 months of breast feeding and I make all my own food. I use the "Super baby food diet". I add things to her food like egg yolk, flax seed, wheat germ, etc. I think store bought baby food has less nutrients and is less apt to help baby gain weight. The real point is is that if your baby is happy and healthy, forget about those growth curves. Mom's of preemies worried so much in the first few weeks of life. Enjoy her now...she may just be a little peanut like our preemie. Sounds like she is doing just fine to me!!!

My Micro was born at 24 weeks, 1lb 3 oz, 11in long. She is now 15 months and 13lb 9oz, 27 1/2 in. She only drinks about 2 1/2 oz bottles and is jsut starting on puree's. Other than being tiny and never getting on "the growth curve" she's healthy. She is also getting help from OT, for feeding and for motor skills.

My micro preemie was born at 28 weeks and six days weighing 1 lb 7 ounces. She will be turning three on the 22nd!!! She now weighs 28 pounds abd is 34 inches tall. I compare her to my niece who was born a week after my daughters due date. They are close to the same height now but my daughter is much more petite in her width.

I have 2 preemies (separate births), My daughter (28 wks) was 1 lb 4oz and remained tiny(really, really skinny despite many efforts to "plump" her up) until about 9 yrs old. When she started kindergarten(age 4 1/2), she only weighed 24 lbs, but once puberty started, she is now completely average in size...My son(also 28 wks) was born 1 lb 14oz...he has had a much more difficult time developmentally than my daughter did, but he is physically bigger. He just turned 3 and already weighs 25 lbs...interesting as no one was really concerned about how small my daughter was because she was making appropraite developmental recovery....but my son is much more substantially delayed and most of his doctors have been especially concerned about him being underweight...I think developmental success is much more crucial than physical size...

Her drs have been looking at the genetic factor. Her geneticist is fairly certain my daughter has a single gene disorder. She has typical facial features and some other things that scream genetic disorder. There has been a battery of tests and so far nothing has given us any answers. We are currently awaiting the results of yet another specialized genetic test that's checking for Angelman Syndrome and Holoprosencephaly Spectrum Disorder. If this test comes back negative like all the others, her Geneticist has told us that my daughter more than likely has a genetic syndrome that hasn't been discovered yet. As much as I don't want to have to add another diagnosis to my little one's already long list, I would rather know the medical condition than not. I'm actually praying for one of these tests to tell us what is going on with her.

I have twin 31 weekers. At birth my son weighed 3 lbs 2 oz and my daughter was 3 lbs even at 1 my daughter weighed about 15 lbs. At almost 3 years, my son is about 30-33 lbs. My daughter weighs about 23 lbs, and eats more then her brother. It sounds like your daughter is fine. My daughter can still fit into 24 month clothes and she will be 3 in 2 months. The doctor told me she is healthy as a horse.

My oldest was born at 25 wks, 1 lb 10 oz. We were in NICU for almost 4 months. As far as her size, she is still considered petite. She is now 8 and full of it but is currently only 56 lbs. She is healthy, just petite:-) The first few years were the hardest w/ RSV, etc. But as she gets older we see fewer and fewer problems caused by being premie.

My little one was at the top end of the micro preemie spectrum. She was 3lbs 12.4oz at 34wks. She couldn't have her length measured until 4 days later b/c she was born w/ Spina Bifida, but she was 16 1/4in long. She is now 10 days short of being 19 mos old and weighs in at a little over 14lbs. and is 28in long. She's on PediaSure and we have to add stuff to that to increase the calories. Everyone thinks she's 6-9mos old until she smiles and they see her mouth full of teeth. :-)

Hi Carie

My Liam was born at 29 weeks and wighed 840g (sorry don't know pounds) and at 10 years he only weighed just over 20kg. I have in the last 2 years had the honour of fostering 6 premmies, all born pre 30 weeks and wighing between 900g and 1.1kg. I find that they grow really well on Novalac AC which is a lactose reduced formula.

My current babe was born at 26 weeks and is now almost 7 months old, and weighs around 7kg's

Good luck with your angel Girl

She is 8 now and in the 50 percentile for height at 4'3" and she weighs 70lbs. When she was 2 she was still very small and weighed in at 22lbs. Then one day started growing and hasn't stopped!

My adopted 24 weeker was 1 lb 11 oz and 9 1/2 inches. He's now 21 months (chronological), weighs 20 lbs, and is about 28 inches. He has followed his own curve and is on the growth chart only for his head circumference (12th percentile). He also eats like a horse and is developmentally on track. He is healthy and happy, but I suspect that he is going to remain pretty small. (Also, his biological parents were both thin and small.)

My micro was born at 26w 1 lb 7 oz. he's now 20 months and weighs just under 23 pounds. He was very, very small for a long time.. failure to thrive.. we eventually had to have a G tube when he was 9 pounds at 9 months old.. he was about 14 pounds at 1 yo. Fortunately the G tube has helped us a ton. He had other issues (with his stomach) beyond "just" prematurity, though.

We did try, and goat's is supposed to be almost allergy free, but our son actually projectile vomited goat's milk as soon as it hit his stomach. We didn't even try it again. Our ped was shocked as almost all kiddos handle goat's milk without trouble.

And yes, you are correct, true milk allergies cannot handle the casein or whey which is the actual protein, not the lactose. Do you know how many processed foods contains casein or whey? Almost every single one. Even most margarines have them!

If it was lactose intolerance, they wouldn't be able to breastfeed either as breastmilk is higher in lactose than cow's milk. I do know one kiddo that it was actual lactose intolerance, and they had a bugger trying to feed him.

Have any of you with little ones who are allergic to cow's milk and soy tried goats milk? We are about to switch my son over to milk and I would prefer to do this rather than cow's milk. I've read (and confirmed with my sons dietician) that most cow milk allergies aren't the lactose, its the casien(sp?) a protien that is found in cows milk, but not is goats milk. Just wondering if anyone had tried this to help.

My daughter was born at 33 week and weighed 4lbs and 14 inches. She just turned 3 and weighs 25 lbs and 33 inches. She is in the 10th percent. I think your daughter is at a good weight and shouldn't gain many lbs in the next couple years anyways. They usually only gain 4-10lbs from 2-4 yrs. If you look at a growth chart it might make more sense. Put in your childs weight and follow the curve and put in a normal baby and follow the curve too. They should be similar but in a lower in weight.

Our ped was highly concerned about nut allergies, so almond milk was out for us. We breastfed with me being off all nuts, dairy, and soy until he self-weaned at 27 months. We've done fortified rice milk since.

Ok, so I didn't have a micropreemie (34.5 weeks), but I thought I'd give you some encouragement! Our son was 5 pounds 4.5 ounces at birth (just above 50th). He finally hit 20 pounds at 18 months (which was not on the charts at all, even the one with the 3rd percentile--we were *way* below it). Part of that was that he is a super active kiddo, part was that he's allergic to dairy and soy. Everything they wanted to feed him (Pediasure, etc) to help him gain had either dairy or soy or both in it! Anyway, he was right at the 2rd percentile at his third birthday, and has slowly climbed his way up to the 15th at 8 years old.

That said, he's a whopping 46 pounds at 8.5 years old. Keep at it, you will get through!
