My first and only child was born at 36 weeks. I went into labor on & off starting at 21 weeks. What are the odds it will happen again? The cause of my preterm labor was unknown.

It depends on why your first one was premature. I delivered my first @ 34 weeks due to preeclampsia & kidneys starting to fail. I had my second @ 38 weeks with no blood pressure problems. You are at a higher risk if you've had a premature baby before, but only your doctor can be for sure. Good luck!

well I have two under 10 months both born at 30weeks but I also have a double uterus so was expecting two premmies. Just because one early doesnt mean all will be but with it unknown why there is no reason to believe it would happen but if you do want number two just be prepared just in case. remember every pregnancy is different. Mine born same time but one normal and natural other footling breech emergency csections so you never can tell.

My daughter was born at 36 weeks, my first son at 32 weeks and my second son was born at 38 weeks. 38 weeks is considered pretty much full term, so I had two earlies and one ok. Harry at 32 weeks though, was due to my grade 4 placenta previa and I suffered a catastrophic bleed so they had to deliver by section.

My first came at 25 weeks, the cause: unknown. My second at 34 weeks even with steriod shots and p-17 shots weekly, the cause: unknown. I am now pregnant with my third and wondering the same thing. I am assuming you are higher risk now for a preemie since you have already experienced it. Just make sure to ask about p-17 shots and weekly cervical ultrasounds to make sure your little one can stay in as long as possible. :o)

it COMPLETELY depends on the reason for your preterm labor. i'm near the Mayo Clinic and doctors have stopped using the stitch for incompetent cervix as well as prescribing bedrest. studies show that neither have helped to stay preterm labor. i've had 3 out of 3 preemies, but was told i would probably never carry to term at all, so i am so thankful for my 3 healthy babies! my 1st at 35 weeks, 1 at 29 weeks and 1 at 32 weeks. my cause was uterine didelphys, meaning my kidney became a fully functioning 2nd uterus when i was in the womb. my 2 uteruses are as small as a fingernail, so the fact that they can stretch enough to hold a 3 or 4 lb baby is amazing. i also have only 1 kidney, which kicks my body into labor by the 3rd trimester. if your cause is pre-eclampsia, HELPP, or something else, there is definitely a reason to travel to a nearby town (or even a far away one!) to get a good and EXPERIENCED doctor/hospital. we recently moved and would not move to a city that did not have a hospital equipped with a level 3 NICU.

All three of my children were preemie, my first was born at 25 weeks, 5 days and my 2nd and 3rd were born at 36 weeks. I have incompetent cervix and had to have a stitch put in for my 2nd and 3rd pregnancy but I do strongly believe in my case, my body just wanted to get the baby out and I would never have gone full-term. Both my sisters on the other hand have gone past their due dates with their babies. The human body is an interesting thing! Good luck and Blessings! Melissa

My daughter was born at 28 weeks after my waters broke for no apparent reason. I had been attending the high risk pregnancy clinic regularly for months (roughly every 2 weeks) and did not have an incompetent cervix or show any major signs of trouble beforehand. I was monitored because I have an abnormal uterus shape (bicornuate), but even now the doctors are not convinced that this was the reason for my daughter's early birth.

I was in a huge amount of stress at the time due to family circumstances, however, so it may well have been due to that.

Oh wow food for thought for us I guess, my first was pre-term at 37weeks spontaneous quick labout, my number two was born at 34.5 weeks again spontaneous labour but two weeks before he was born I'd had a really bad bout of bronchitis OB not sure if that's the cause. We'd love another but so nervous, his lungs were awful as I had no steroid injections and he came home on oxygen after 5 weeks in hospital and at 15months actual came off the oxygen. If we do have another I'll be right on the OB again to give me everything to stop an early bub. I have endo and adenomyosis and my uterus isn't great from that so I think it's me that causes my bubs to come early, not so much them. I didn't have any pre-term labour that I knew about and my waters had to be broken with number one and broke as I was pushing with number two.

I wonder the same thing. My son was born at week 29. I am pretty nervous about getting pregnant again. My waters broke at week 27. Doctors dont know why. I really hope it doesnt happen again... what are the odds?

Your risk is higher, but that does not mean it will happen. You'll want to avoid anything that can cause preterm labor, in my opinion, but definitely air your concerns with your doctor. S/he will have a better idea of what to expect and how to deal with it.

The on/off labor was NOT braxton hicks. I progressed alittle each time. And I was on weeks hormone injections, daily meds, and got other meds while in the hospital to stop labor.

if the cause was unknown nd they have ruled out ALL physical reasons then I don't see why another bundle of joy would follow the same path. Was the off/on labor Braxton-Hicks? and did they give you meds to stop labor?

My premie was 5 weeks and 5 days premature but with his pregnancy we expected it because i have an abnormally shaped uterus which causes such as well as causing the baby to be breached. We didn't know this with my first baby born Feb. 11, 2007 she was exactly 3 weeks to the day. The reason we didn't know was because i was 13 1/2 weeks preg when we found out i was expecting with my son i caught it before 6 weeks.

If the cause of your preterm labor was unknown, there's a VERY good chance you wouldn't have another premature birth. There is also a hormone injection you can receive during your next pregnancy that will further reduce the odds of early labor. Your OB/midwife would be an even better resource to discuss the odds of another premature birth. But generally speaking, when there's no known cause (such as pre-e, incompetent cervix, etc.), the odds are much lower.

After having one preemie, the chances of having another preemie does increase, but that doesnt necessarily mean that you will have a preemie again. I was a preemie and my sister was not. a friend of mine had one preemie and two full term, and one over by a week. Every pregnancy is different and with not knowing why you went into preterm labor, the reason may or may not be something that is likely to happen again...I'd guess it's all up in the air.

With my son my water never broke. Even when I was 36 weeks. My labor reached 5 cm and stopped, so they induced and broke my water. At 21 weeks I was dialated to a 1cm, 24 weeks I was 25% effaced, 27 weeks I was 2 cm, 32 weeks I was 2 1/2 and 50% effaced. I was on bedrest from 21 weeks until I delivered at 36 weeks. There is no "high risk pregnancy clinic" here, I live in a VERY small town. We have one clinic and one hospital.

Hi Nichole,

I would really talk to a doctor, and try to figure out what could be POSSIBlE reasons for your "labor on & off starting at 21 weeks". Like, ask them what signs of labour you did or didn't have. When your water broke? Were you on bed rest? Was your cervix softened/opene/how much, etc. Also, ask if they can sign you up with 'high risk pregnancy clinic'?

I just know that generally your chance of 2nd preemie is higher by ~15%, but statistics can't actually predict what will happen with you personally.

With my first son my water broke at 27 wks and I went into a labour, which they were able to hold off for one week, after which infection started, and I went into full-blown labour at 28 weeks.

With my 2nd son they watched me for signs of possible preemie birth, and apparently I had incompetent cervix, which they didn't realize with my first one. I was on a bed rest for a few weeks, and delivered him totally on time, with good weight and no med. complications.

There is a chance of having another preemie but there's no way to be sure. Since your first was a preemie your doctor would probably see a lot more the second time around to try to avoid a premature delivery

I had a set of b/g twins born six weeks premature ( 33 wks 6 days) on June 8, 2008. My twins are now two and a half and you can't tell they were preemies. My preterm labor was also unknown as of the cause. It was just brushed off because of twins.

My second pregnancy I just had our youngest July 12, 2010 ( made it to 38 weeks 6 days). He had no problems and was able to come home with me from the hospital.

They say once you have a preemie it is more likely to have a preemie the second time around and because of that I freaked out quite a bit more during my pregnancy, but every pregnancy is different. You could very well carry to full term next time around.
