I have twins (boy & girl) who were born at 26 weeks. My son, Austen, was 2 lbs 2 oz and my daughter, Emilee, was 1 lb 12.5 oz. Emilee, though smaller, is doing very well she is developmentally where she should be for her corrected age, but Austen is not. Austen had a brain hemmorhage when he was born, so he has 2 shunts and also had to have a tracheostomy because of the mistake of an attending doctor. Thankfully the damage that was done is healing on its own and he will only have to have the trach for the minimum 9 months. We just recently found out that he can not see anything. He does grimace to light but does not follow anything, unless it's accompanied by sound. The doctor is hopeful that he will be able to see, but we will not know for sure for a while. We are keeping a close eye on him. Has anyone experienced this? If so, does you child see now or did their sight never develop?

My twins are now almost 9 months old. Austen did have stage 2 ROP in both eyes, but his eyes are mature now and the ROP is gone. We are unsure what is causing the loss in vision now. The doctor thinks it may have to do with his brain hemorhage. We are just praying that his vision is just delayed now and that he will be able to see soon.

Hi Nancee. I have a daughter who was born at 25 weeks (1 lb 12 oz.). She was recently released from the hospital. Prior to her release, I was told that she has ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) in both eyes. I am not sure if she can see or not (never thought to ask the doctor) but she is currently seeing an opthamologist who specializes in children every two weeks to determine whether she needs surgery or some other measure to correct the problem. There is a chance that she will outgrow it. You did not say how old your children are now. I am sure that you have already had him checked for ROP but if not, definitely get him to a pediatric opthamologist as soon as you can. Good luck!
