Hello, does anyone know what causes projectile vomiting. my son has done it on and off for a year now. he was born at 34 weeks. he was in the nicu for 5 weeks. he is all healthy other than the spitups. he has times when he is fine and then he will start doing it every day, sometimes up to 3 or 4 times a day. can anyone help come up with a reasonable answer.

This defo sounds like reflux. gaviscon infant is the best solution i found for my son. i hope everything goes well and the main thing is dont panic, alot of children have it so just make sure your baby is fed slowly and is burped well.good luck

mine does it also, just occasionally. he also has reflux and is on meds. I make sure he isn't overfed and stays upright after eating, usually about 30 mins, even an hour sometimes. Usually he will do it after a feeding about 45 mins in.. Frequent burping helps too. (3 or 4 times) Laying him down will almost always cause him to puke, projectile or spit up if I don't let him digest some first!

My little girl was a 26 weeker and she also projectile vomits. She is now 15 months old and continues to do it at least once a week. She has reflux. She is getting better as she gets older. When she was between 9 and 12 months it was really bad. She would do it everyday and it would be a few times a day. I hope that things start to get better for you and you little one soon.

Im glad to hear that your child outgrew the projectile vomiting. I know what it feels like doing endless laundry and clean up and feeling so bad for your child when they are going threw it, their bodies are so tiny to be wrenching and such. My son seems to be getting better, it just comes and goes. Soon it will be gone for good.

My twins were also preemies and both had projectile vomitting. The pediatrician put them on several different meds and nothing seemed to work. Even had the tests done. He said that they usually grow out of it when they're one year old... and the did, just like he said. It wasn't overnight... Everyday was a little bit less and a little bit less and before I knew it, it was done and over with. It was a loooonnnngg year..

Rachel,
Projectile vomiting is a common occurrence in all babies (not just preemies). Usually, they tend to outgrow it in a few years. I say, 'usually', as I am almost 38 years old and haven't outgrown it yet!!! LOL Thankfully, my preemie twins (35 weeks now 22 months) didn't seem to inherit that particular trait even with the acid reflux.

From my personal experience, I would say that it is a particularly violent muscle spasm from the abdomen during the course of vomiting, and once you start vomiting, everything comes up. It is more a 'style of vomiting' and not the actual cause of vomiting. If he is vomiting, he has an upset tummy to begin with.

Hope that helps.

My daughter was born at 34weeks and has the exact same issue. She does have reflux pretty bad and has developed a chronic cough which often triggers the vomit. They just switched her reflux med and she's having an upper GI scan in two weeks and we are now seeing a pulmonolgy specialist. She had underdeveloped lungs too when she was born. I'm like you, just looking for a reasonable answer/explanation. I don't find it comforting when they tell me, "you just may have to wait for her to outgrow it?!" I'm hoping for answers in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I just am constantly on edge about whether or not she'll vomit. Good luck.

Maybe it is reflux, my daughter never projectile vomited but she would spit up constantly and she still periodically does even on reflux meds. Talk to his pedi about it and see what he/she thinks. HTH.
