Wondering what other moms have done for your preemies birthday cake. My son was 6wks early weighing 4.2lbs. Now 8mths old weighting 15lbs. He is breastfed only eats purees 1oz at dinner if he wants it he prefers to nurse most of the time. So for his birthday he wont be doing figure foods so what do I do for a cake. Do I just do a normal one and he just wont get any? Wondering if anyone else has gone threw this?

I like the idea of cool whip dont have worry about him choking and he"ll be a mess so well make for great pics. thanks for the ideas.

There are bakeries in our grocery stores that offer a free 1st birthday cakes. Giant / Martin's Foods. It is a small white cake with white frosting decorated very cute but has 1/3 the sugar of regular cake.

Since the cake is for the memories and the photos I would suggest a cute decorative plate or bowl filled with cool whip for his hands in it~highchair pictures. He can make the cute mess with out getting cold fingers from ice cream and it will also be an easy clean up.

My son was born on 30 week. We bought a small tub of Haagen Das ice-cream to substitute a cake.

My son was 12 weeks early (3lbs at birth) and we followed a regular feeding schedule (just 12 weeks delayed) starting with just breastmilk. So when he was about 7 months old we started on pureed foods, 8-9 months we started thicker stuff mashed potatoes, mashed up baked beans (which he LOVED). By the time he was a year he was eating cherrios, baby puffs and teething bisquits (I think he got his teeth right around 9 months). We had pasta, breadsticks and a salad for dinner. He actually had some pasta (mostacolli and a little bit of a breadstick). And for the cake we had a smash cake and he did pretty good eating it. It was chocolate because I knew that it would look good on pictures and he would probably like the taste.

We had a "smash cake" for our former 24 weeker. This gave him something to stick his hands in, put a candle in, etc. He didn't really eat any of it - but seeing his hand covered in frosting was great.

Maybe an organic cake made with pureed carrots and only items your baby has tolerated pureed. I am sure they make vegan cakes.

Cupcakes are a good idea, the kids just mash them up anyway.

What about an ice cream cake??

My daughter was born 11 weeks early and had only started solids a few weeks before her birthday - we made cupcakes and everyone enjoyed them. She played with hers and squished the icing, but didn't take one bite. She was HAPPY as can be :) We got great photos of singing to her and helping her blow out the candles and her exploring the textures, even though she never actually ate any. It was perfect - our biggest problem is she wanted to nap sooner than the party was over, some friends missed out on seeing her, haha! Don't worry too much - this party is more for the parents than the child...you've accomplished so much in the first year, let alone raising a preemie! Enjoy the party :)
