What was the cause of the prematury of your baby?

Hi,

I was curious to see what were the main reasons why we are mothers of preemies.

My daughter was born at 35 weeks because my water broke. Doctors don't see any cause to that except being to tired, therefore, for next baby I'll probably be put to rest at 32 weeks.

Well i must admit my story is slightly shocking.

I actually didnt even know i was pregnant until my contractions started. I was at work, workin away. And all of a sudden i started feeling terrible cramps (which i now know were contractions lol). And thinking it was an infection or something the next day i ended up going to the hospital sitting in the emergency waiting room for approxamitly 6 hrs. Then finally a doctor came out, pushed on my tummy and exp[lained i was going into labour. Once in the delivery room...it was three pushes and my little miracle was born! Devinae was born at about 32 weeks and was in the NICU for about 8 weeks. She's is now 3 motnhs old and 10 pnds. My little pumpkin seed!

My daughter was for at 34 weeks.  I had been put on bed rest just the day before for being dilated 3 cm.  My labor was 2 hours (start to finish.)  On her second day of life, she was diagnosed with jejuanal atresis (a congenital small intestin blockage)  which surgery fixed.  She spent 3 weeks in the NICU, mostly for feeding/growing.  No need for intubation except just after surgery for about 4 hours.  She had several periods of a/b's but the neonatologist attributed that to reflux.  She is 20 months now and doing great.  She has made all her developemental milestones for her birth age.

My 11yr old was a premie.  She was born at 24 weeks and weighed in at 1 pound 4oz.  I went in for the 24 week check up and ultrasound one day (everything great) and she was born the next day.  I had severe eclampsia where I went blind and my brain and organs were shutting down.  They did an emergency C-section to save my life not the baby's.  She spent 3 months in the NICU and came home the day before she was due.  Now 11 years later she is a perfect young lady with only a few eye problems.  I have just had my second child this last November and everything went perfect.  My son was born 1 week before his due date, weighing in at 7 pounds 1 oz.  It was a huge difference having a child that was full term.  And yes it was like having a child for the first time the second time.  If I knew what it was like the first time I probably would not have my son right now.  LOL   I am so blessed to have both my kids I would not trade them for anything.

My son was born at 33 weeks, due to a bleed behind the placenta, on the friday i was having pains in my stomach but didnt think ne thin of it as was only slight pains, on the sat the pains were getting worse but me and my partner both thought it was the branston hicks as they kept coming and going so we still went shopping, but by sat night i couldn take the pain anymore so spoke to my midwife and was told to go hospital, to then be told i was in labour and that the reason it kept coming and stopping was beause my body new it was time, they then stopped for a while so got took to a room to get some sleep but as soon as i lay down they started again and then i started to bleed and he finaaly turned up at 7.56 sunday morning.

I was 34 weeks to the day when I went for my checkup at the doctor.  I was already in the hospital 4 days before hand for false labor.  The doc took my BP and it was very high.  Here to find out I had preeclampsia.  They took me to my local hospital for further testing.  At this point, we weren't sure if I was going to have her that day or days from that point.  While at the hospital they completed more blood work and found I had HELP Syndrome.  At that point I only had 4200 platelets in my body.

I was taken by ambulance...by the way my hubby was away on business during this ordeal.  This left his 80 year old grandmother doing all the calling and such.  I was taken to a hospital which had a NICU an hour away from home.   I had an emergency C section after hours of watching my BP escalate.

My daughter was born 4 pounds and 2 ounces.  She was in perfect health.  All she needed to do is gain weight, eliminate the jaundice, and eat from a bottle.  My daughter only spent a miraculous 10 days at the NICU.  Kari is now five years old, and you would have never known she was a preemie!

By the way, about four hours my daughter was born, my hubby arrived to greet his beautiful new and unexpected arrival!

Hi, my son was born at 28 weeks and weighed 3lbs. 14oz. They already knew he would come early because they discovered I had an incompetent cervix at my 21 weeks 2nd level ultrasound. I was put on bed-rest for the remainder of the pregnancy (2 months). I also had 2 sets of steroid shots for his lung development. We where blessed because he was only on the respirator for 24 hours. Overall his weight was perfect at 3 months old. He did develop acid reflux at the same age and had to be put on an apnea monitor until he was about 10 months but at the same age he was over it. He is a happy, healthy little 4.5 year old boy.

I didnt even know I was ill. I went to the doctors for a blood test when I was 29 weeks pregnant and just told them I had had a few nose bleeds so they took my blood pressure 3 times and said it was very high and I also did a urine test which showed protein. They told me it would be best if I went to hospital and tests showed I had preaclamcia I was in hospital for a week when the doctors came and told me, I couldnt wait any longer because me and my unborn son would die and told me what would happen once my son was born and what % of servival my son had. I was taken for an emergency c section and my son was born 10 weeks early on the 22nd of October 2006 weighing just 2lb 9oz hes now a very healthy 2 year old.

My little one decided he had had enough of doctor's poking and prodding him on the inside and decided to greet the world (and more needles) on the outside at 31 weeks. At my 16 week ultrasound, the OB found that my son had a lower bladder obstruction and all his urine was trapped and had refluxed up into his kidneys...causing end stage kidney failure. We tried four fetal surgeries between weeks 18 - 24, before I started having an "irritable" uterus. After that, they would just insert needles to drain off his pooled urine and infuse me with man-made amniotic fluid. We got to 31 weeks when my uterus said it was done being poked (I was SO bruised). Never had any preemie issues and he was ready to come home in 5 weeks completely bottled fed and off any oxygen support, but he got late onset group B  and had to stay an extra 10 days for antibiotics. The promised NICU ride began AFTER we stepped into the regular hospital for us. The kidney transplant floor has many highs and lows for us.

My daughter Kylee was born at 29 weeks. I had preeclampsia and the only cure for that is to deliver. She was 2 lbs and 4 oz when she was born and is now 7 lbs at 2 months. I had normal blood pressure during my pregnancy, but did have high blood pressure before I got pregnant and was advised to stop taking my meds if I wanted to get pregnant. I started to swell pretty badly about a week before Thanksgiving and when I called the doctor about some spotting, I was told to go to the hospital to OB Observation. Once there, it was determined that the baby was fine, but my blood pressure was really high and it would not come down. I was admitted, started on mag sulfate and other meds and then my doctor told me I would have to deliver. She was born on Thanksgiving Day, the day before my 31st birthday and is the light of my life.

I was 29+4 when my water broke. I called my doctor and she told me to go to the hospital. I delivered 3 days later, but my doctor never told me why I went into pre-mature labor nor did she ask if I might know why. I was in a difficult situation at the time; a cheating husband, a brother just going overseas, horrible financial situation, etc...  So my best guess would be STRESS.

by the way, both of my girls are now grown and one is the mom of two babies of her own, the second is expecting her first. My second child had pretty well every imaginable heath issue possible with a premie, the cranial bleed, patent ductus, you name it. She even played hockey up until just before she got pregnant so dont worry too much okay? and tell your dr hes nuts if he is saying that because you have one early you will automatically have them all early. it is diferent with each pregnancy. Ive known alot of moms that made it through their pregnancies just fine without having the second or 3rd etc. preemie.

My daughter was born at 31 weeks. She was 4 lbs. 8 ozs. I had started bleeding in my second month and went to the ER to be checked. I was told by the ER doctor that there was a hole in the cord by the placenta. I was put off work for 3 days until I could see my regular OB. I was then told by my OB that the ER doctor could not tell me that I had this problem because he was not my regular doctor. My OB looked over the report and said everything was fine. At 31 weeks, my placenta ruptured.

My daughter does have a irregular heartbeat and a heart murmur, but does not have to take any medications for the issues. She is now 9 years old and luckily has not had any developmental problems. She is a Honor Roll student and growing at the same pace as everyone else in her grade.

I only found out a couple of months after my baby was born the cause of premature labor. After getting the lab results, my doctor told me I had placenta increta. My daughter was born at 31 weeks and the delivery went ok. She weighed 4lbs 3oz and was breathing on her own. However, the complications started when my doctor was trying to deliver my placenta. I started to hemmorage and was then rushed to the operating room where they had no choice but to remove my uterus. Audrey Brook is my first and only baby and I thank God every day for keeping us safe.

My water broke at 32 weeks and 2 days with twins. The day before I went into labor, I had been in the hospital. They wanted to monitor my blood pressure as it had been high that day at a checkup. That was the first and only incident I had of high blood pressure during my pregnancy that I am aware of. The boys were in the Special Care nursery for 25 days.

My doctors told me the reason that my son was born early(almost 6 weeks early) was because of placenta privea. The placenta tore away from the uterine wall and caused some major bleeding. I was already at the hospital(they said that was a good thing) hooked up to the fetal monitors. I had some bad cramping earlier in the day and hadnt felt the baby move in quite some time. I was in labor at that time and they gave me the shot to stop the labor(in the back of my arm). That didnt help so they admitted me. Around 1am i believe i went to the bathroom and there was red in my underwear. I took a few steps back into the room and all of a sudden it felt like I had peed and i looked down and It was like I was peeing blood. The dr checked me and then got the moblile ultrasound machine and then next thing I knew i was being taken to another room. They got me comfy and I figure it to be 1/2 hour later i started shaking and was in shock. The dr came in and checked me and when he pulled out his hand there were chunks(i guess of the placenta)im sorry if it grosses people out. I didnt see it. All i heard was "we have to go now...get her ready" my mom was there with me and asked if there was time to call my fiance so he could be there( he had a 15 minute ride and was home with our oldest)it wasnt real bad when he left earlier in the night...the dr said "theres no time we cant wait".....anyway im sorry to ramble on....its comforting to be able to share my story with others that understand... I only saw him long enough to kiss him before they rushed him to the NICU.. Then it wasnt till almost 12 hours later that i saw him again. The weird thing is that i didnt know how bad things had gotten till later that night. I was joking with the dr to give me a tummy tuck after the c section!!! I had Justin at 539am thursday morning and went home on Sunday. He didnt get to come home till that following Friday. That was the hardest thing I have ever done. To leave him at the hospital. I cried like you wouldnt believe....my eyes were puffy and red for the next few days. I had my wonderful grandmother take me to and from the hospital all week. I stayed all day. Hes a healthy 4 month old now and we are blessed.

My son was born at exactly 26wks due to an incompetent cervix. I noticed an unusual discharged and made a doc appt. and was admitted to the hospital on complete bed rest. I was a couple of weeks shy of being 5 months and I was dilated 3cms when admitted. I was in the hospital exactly one month before he was born and he stayed in the NICU for 70 days, he came home one month before his due date. He had a perfect stay in the NICU, only having to have 3 blood transfusions due to the test that were done daily. He did happen to have an eye infection but that cured up within a week or so. He will be turning one on Feb 20th and has not had any problems (thank God) since he has been home. Not even a cold.

Quoting Jennifer:

My oldest was born at 25 weeks due to incompetent cervix.  It was a complete surprise, as my pregnancy was going perfectly up to that point. He stayed in the hospital 10 weeks with a lot of ups and downs, as I'm sure you all know. We feel so blessed to have him. He has had a lot of delays in basically every area, but I am so thankful for him and he is now a happy healthy 4 year old. I did have another son and due to the incompetent cervix I received a cerclage at 13 weeks. I was then able to carry him to full term with no problem.

I also have Incompetent cevix. My son made it to 29 weeks. I went in for my 7 month check up and the doctor told me I was 3 cm. This was my first child and I was freaking out. My husband was more scared than I was. My little man was in the hospital for a month and a half. He was on cpap and came home on a apnea monitor. He will be 4 in August and you can not tell he was a preemie. I had another child 9 months ago and I also had a cerclage put in. When they took it out at my 36 week visit I immediatley went to 1 cm. She was born 2 days later. She was 6lbs 14 oz. I am glad I did not go another 3 weeks she would have been almost 8 lbs. They are the healthiest babies now and we are so thankful to God for the healing power and the strength he gave us to deal with my son those days in the hospital.

My 4th was born at 33+4 due to complete placenta previa complicated further by gestational diabetes. I was diagnosed at 20 wks w/previa but was told it would correct itself. However, I had known from 4 wks that something wasn't right (especially after several early ultrasounds showed a detached placenta, a possible mole which may have been a twin, intrauterine bleeding which may have been a lost twin, followed by placenta reattachment at the cervix). My doctor was more concerned w/the diabetes (I had it w/each of my kids--each pregnancy it got a little worse). They didn't even have to do the fasting glucose this time--by 22 wks my fastings were over 100 and post-prandials 180+ (I'd been monitoring randomly since 12 wks per doc's orders). The med school was doing oral insulin meds (apparently they switch based on newest research between inj & oral). Even w/glyburide my blood sugars were out of control. I put myself on a NO CARB diet (veggies & protein only) and was doing much better until I started bleeding at 28 wks.

I was transferred from 1 hosp to another that was attached to a children's hosp when they freaked out & thought they couldn't stop my labor. After 5 days & a steroid shot I went home on strict bed rest until 11 days later when I had a huge gusher and was back in alternating between the high risk unit and L&D (every time I started bleeding I would go into labor). The anti-contraction meds gave me the worst migraine of my life!!! They had to give me fiorecet prior to every dose! The IV's kept rupturing veins & leaking, and it was very frustrating to not be home w/my other 3 kids and husband. At 33+4 when I had my 5th bleed (a BAD one plus they couldn't get my fastings below 110 or post-prandials below 200), the docs said that was enough and yanked me in for an emergency c-section, bumping 2 other women out of the way! My husband made it in time for the incision!

My son was born at 5 lbs 3 ozs (a 10 lber if he'd gone full term! My 3rd was 8-4 a wk early) but his lungs were not developed. He spent 9 days in the isolette on various forms of O2. I wasn't allowed to hold him for several days! I kept watching little 3 lb girls go home while my "wimpie white boy" couldn't get off the feeding tube! Once he was finally able to latch on & nurse, he improved rapidly and was home after only 2 wks.

He just turned 1 a couple wks ago and has completely caught up w/his siblings and is heavier and taller than they were at 1! He is almost walking (only 2-3 steps before sitting down!) and my pediatrician is very pleased. At 6 months she was talking early intervention because he was still very floppy but by 9 months she knew he was alright.

We were very blessed to have our church community surround us w/prayer and provide meals for my family while I was on bed rest and in the hospital. My parents were still local and helped out w/the older kids when needed.

I had my tubes tied cause I figured God had blessed us w/4 healthy kids (despite having my first at 17) but my pregnancies were each more complicated than the last and why risk my life and health. We'll probably adopt or foster more when ours are a little older.

Hi there

With my second pregnancy i was constantly having problems throughout.. From spotting of blood every so offten to having stomache pains and being really sick all the time.

The doctors in the hospital would examin me and tell me that everything was fine every single time till the last stages of my pregnancy when i was loosing the most horrible discharge i had ever seen ( well at the time i thought thats what it was).

I think i was around 31 weeks when this started happening and after about a week from that point in time my baby stopped moving.

I would not feel her as much i should have and you know within yourself that something is wrong, so i spoke to the doctors at the hospital again and i explained everything to them and STILL they kept telling me nothing was wrong.

At 34 1/2 weeks i went into labour, my water did not break i was just having contractions and she was born 7 hrs later...

When she was born she was not alive they had to bring her back to me (thank the angels above)

My amnotic fluid was infected because i had lost my plug and infection got up inside. Her oxigion was cut off slowly over time.

She was 5 1/2 weeks premature.

Just goes to show that you never know what to expect until the unexpected comes our way..

I also have polycystic ovarian syndrome that makes it difficult to get pregnant. It took us five years to get pregnant the first time. 2 miscarriages and eight years later with the help of fertility drugs, hormones, blood thinners i gave birth to a health baby girl weighing in at 9lbs 31/4 oz. i was induced 3 days before my due date.

my son was born approx 6 weeks early, my water broke at work, i had to be transferred via ambulance to another hospital b/c my hospital was not equipped to deliver babies under 35 weeks gestation...my doctor(s) could not explain why my son came so early, they just stated that sometimes its just time for them to come
however, when i was about 28 weeks pregnant i developed a bladder infection, it was treated, but approx 2 weeks later it returned, and i have read that an un-treated bladder infection can lead to pre-term labour, also b/c of my line of work i had to endure many (very) early mornings, which made me extremely exhausted, which again can cause a woman to go into early labour as well, these are just a few conclusions i have come too, because like i said my doctors said that there was nothing that i could have done/or did to have my son early

The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. He was 4 lbs 9 oz but healthy and strong enough to join me in the ward. He is now 3 and a half, really tall for his age (43 inches) and weighs 51 lbs. (my job at the time was very stressful)  However, I was told that I was in liver and kidney failure due to HELLP syndrome and that he would need to be delivered immediately.  I had never heard of HELLP before and until this point was having a good pregnancy.  It was shocking to say the least.  However, both my son and I are just fine.  He is a healthy 20 month old.

I was told that a simple urinary tract infection that was not noticed by me or my ob was the reason my water broke at 32 weeks.  I was told it is a very common cause of preterm labor.  When I got pregnant with my 2nd they checked for infection continuously and everytime it came back positive.  I ended up going on a low dose of antibiotics for the last few months of my pregnancy and I delivered an 8 pound baby at 39 weeks.

I notice a trend here that alot of the "PROM" moms (premature rupture of membranes) don't have any answers as to why this happened. It's very frustrating not to know, especially those that want to have another baby. In my case, I went in for an ultrasound at 19 weeks and 5 days and was diagnosed with oligohydraminous (low amniotic fluid) measuring a level of 2. I remembered that 10 days or so prior that I woke up in a puddle for 3 nights in a row and I chalked it up to a leaky bladder. Their was no signs of amniotic fluid present when they did a spec exam that day. A week later, I started bleeding and leaking fluid, and did so every day for the next 11 weeks. I was miserable and frightened. They could never determine that what was leaking was amniotic fluid amidst numerous spec exams. Apparently blood can alter the results of the test, so it wasn't until I was 27 weeks that they saw amniotic fluid under the microscope. That was the day I was admitted and given steroid shots and mag to postpone labor. That day was no different than the previous 7 weeks, so in actuality, I can say with a certain amount of confidence that my water actually broke around 18 weeks. The fact that they could not determine that at the time was actually a blessing, because I don't think that I or my doctors would have had alot of hope if that were the case. We just took each day as it came, and at 31 weeks I delivered my little boy. The first few hours of life were quite scary, but once they got him stablized on an oscillator/ventilator, he really never looked back. What a little miracle! But I guess I'll never know why that happened the way it did??

Adam was born at 33 weeks, 4 days. I have RH incomaptibilty, Rhogam somehow failed/didn't cover the amount of blood mixture when I gave birth to my daughter. I had MCA dopplar u/s's every week from 28 weeks and at exactly 33 weeks his pressure started to go up, so I was induced a few days later.

My water broke at 31 weeks, they have no clue why.  They told me that since they cannot id why they will probably be more careful next time but not sure to what extent they will take that care.  I will go with the flow, but for now my little one is 9 months and i am loving him!

My daughter was born at 34 weeks.  I got an absessed tooth, went to the dentist and was put on antibiotics.  The next day, I lost my mucus plug and two days later my water broke.  Before the tooth issue, I was in good shape.  The doctor's blamed the tooth.

My water broke at 29 weeks 1 day, and I had my twins at 29 weeks 3 days. I had a fall about a week before my water broke, but there's no way to know for sure that this is what caused my water to break. I did not go into labour until the second day after my water broke, then I was rushed in for an emergency c-section. Collin was 2 lbs 9 oz and Nicholas was 3 lbs 2 oz. They were in the NICU for about 4 weeks, then into a regular nursery for about 3 weeks, and I brought them home a little under 1 month before my due date.

My 9 yr old was a preemie for unknown reasons. She is now a briliiant, tyical 9 yr old  makes straight As in school and is doing great! No issues from her premature birth.

My 2 yr old twins were 10 weeks early. They were early likely because there were 2 of them. I was on full bedrest at 13 weeks with active contractions and on hosiptalized bedrest at 27 weeks in full labor. It took 5 bolluses of *cringe* magnesium to get it under control. They did well in the NICU and came home at 34 weeks gestation, both right at 4 lbs. Currently, excet for my son being little, here are no known issues from their prematuity. God really took care of those babies!!!!
