Whole Milk At One

Kennady had her 1 year check up yesterday & is able to drink whole milk. She's gained 14 pounds since she's been born, so the doctor said that she was okay to drink whole milk. She seems to love it & it is helping her sleep more at night. I don't think that she was satisfied enough with formula. We are still mixing half formula & half whole milk, but she is enjoying it =] Thanks for the advice =]

We started Whole milk at his adjusted age of 1, he was/is so skinny we wanted him to have the extra calories of formula. He's 36 inches tall and 26 pounds (and 2 yeas old). Your Dr should make a reccomendation at her 1 year check up.

My son was a 29wker and didn't start whole milk until he was about 15m actual age. His pediatrtion wanted him on high calorie formula longer because he was still having weight gain issues and not yet eating solids (even finger foods) well. I would wait for the one year appointment and get advice from your pedi then.

My son was 5 weeks premature, but he had "caught up" (i.e. he was at or above average for his age) in his height/weight by the time he was about 5 months old. At that point, we stopped doing any adjusting for his premature birth... so he got whole milk when he was one. That said, if you are uncertain it wouldn't hurt to call your pediatrician to double check since he/she has the fully history of your daughter's progress over the last year. I hope you and your family enjoyed your daughter's 1st birthday celebration!

My daughter didn't start whole milk until she was one year old adjusted (she was 12 wks premature). She was still on Enfacare until she turned one and then regular formula until her due date. Our pediatrician said we could switch her to milk at her birthday, but the nutritionist through our hospital's NICU follow-up program said even with good weight gain she doesn't recommend whole milk until their due date. That preemies need that extra time with the formula.
