Every child is different and some kids learn faster then others. Preschool is basically to get kids ready for school. Once they have finished preschool they should know all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. they should be able to count to at least 20 if not more than that. depending on the teacher. they learn noises and shapes and anything else in that category. dont worry yet. he should be fine and im sure next time he get tested he will do just fine.

Did I see you say the teacher tested him on the FIRST day of school? A preschooler? O, yeah, that's kinda crazy in my opinion. I teach (well, taught before my daughter came along) 3rd grade and we never do beginning assessments even at THAT age until after they get to know me a little bit. Were there any other concerns the teacher brought up besides the test? Any other observations she has made? He could just be a bad "test taker". I have students who do great on every day work but freak our when they hear the word "test". I agree with what others have said...look at the whole child, not just that test! Let us know how he does in kindergarten:-)

I agree with Amanda. Imagine my surprise when I found out that my son never talks at preschool except to respond to a question! He is never quiet at home and was putting sentences together at 13 months. So, if you are not worried about what you are seeing at home, I wouldn't worry about this screening!

yeah when they tested him it was his first day there. of course he was prolly scared seeing as he didnt know her at all and he had never been in any form of child care before. i tested him and he did just fine. of course he had a couple weaknesses but he has overcome them all. we put him in speech at school to help overcome some vocabulary issues but i think he is doing well. his doctor said from a medical standpoint he is perfectly fine.

I don't really know what this test is, but you have to bear in mind that every child is different, as is every caregiver. If your son was having a bad day, or the teacher was, it could have skewed the results. (my daughter once had a test that said she couldn't do 10pc puzzles at daycare, but she was actually doing 48pc puzzles at home!) Try testing your son yourself when you are both relaxed and he's in an accomodating mood. See if the results are similar. Also, are you worried about your son's development? Do you feel comfortable with how he's going? You are the ultimate judge of how your kids are doing, and as long as you are honest with yourself, and happy with the progress of your kids, don't worry about it. If you are worried, then talk to the teacher. Ask what the results mean and ask what you can do to improve the results with your son.
