Overreacting

I just returned from taking my 21 month old preemie to the ER. He had a runny nose and a horrible cough. And then this afternoon he started weezing. He has never done that before, so it got me nervous. He had RSV shots last year, but they are not doing them this year. So I call his ped. and they tell me that i was his mother and if i thought it was necessary to take him to the hospital i should. Not alot of help. So i started to panic thinking of all the stories and RSV, pnem., bronc. and everything else and then he had underdeveloped lungs. I should take him. Well i made a good call he has a upper resp. infection. My question is is there anyone else that feels that they are more nervous because of all the added complications of a preemie? I felt like i was overreacting and people would think that i was crazy. Is anyone still nervous after 2 years that something could still go wrong?

My daughter Aurora, ex 26wks 669g, is 15 1/2 months old (12 corrected) and has been re-hospitalised 4 times this year with bronchiolitis and now has whooping cough to contend with even though she is fully immunised. The nursing staff in the kids ward know us so well that everytime we get re-admitted it's "not you again!!" said with a smile. I don't bother asking myself if I'm over reacting, I just go to the ER, with Aurora's history I'd rather be safe and be told nothing's wrong than panic later on.

Yeah, I am always nervous something could still go wrong, but I think it is better to be safe then sorry. I don't think you overreacted, I think you were right in line :)

I actually have a sign on my door telling people that we are unable to have visitors during the flu season unless they have had the flu shot and are not sick in any way. This includes family. It's still a little hard when you have older kids that go to school and bring the stuff back with them. I know that the docs don't like antibiotics unless completely neccesary because the germs/infections, etc. can become immune if taken too much. Our babies have only been on it once and it was an urgent care doctor who had prescribed it. It didn't really help and that's when our doc put Tommy on the nebulizer. That did seem to help. Our doc also says to take them out into the cold, walk around the house a couple of times then bring them back in. It loosens it up so you or they can get it out. Also, sitting in a steamy bathroom can help. They also gave me a recipe for home-made nasal drops. Around here, the docs and urgent care won't see kids with fevers unless they are 104 on Tylenol. That scares me. It happened with my 7yr old but not with the babies yet. Good luck and hope he feels better soon.

Yes they gave my son the flu shot this year, but when I take him to his doctor he makes me feel like I am overreacting. We live in a small town and there are not alot of doctors to choose from. I took him there a week before telling him that he had a weird smell to his breath and he kind of laughed at me and told me he couldn't find anything wrong with him. And then a week later I have to take him to the ER and he has an infection. After my doctor found out I took him to the ER he wanted to see him. And then the doctor was upset that they gave him antibiotics. His white blood count was very high and he still told me it was probably just croup and I should have just used warm air mist. I am trying to make sure that my son doesn't get Pneumonia again like he got in the NICU. I just wish that I wasn't so nervous and feel like I am waiting for something bad to happen.

Our triplets were born at 30 wks. They had the Synagis last year but they gave them a regular flu shot this year. Have they done that for your baby? Mine are 16 mos and I do get nervous, especially for the two smaller ones. They seem to not build up to a cold. When they get sick, they get sick now. My small boy uses a nebulizer when he gets really sick and starts wheezing. I do seem to call the doctor a lot and they don't seem to mind.

My daughter is almost 16 months old & I am completely nervous & scared that something will go wrong. She was born at 28 weeks & has always been healthy, but I can't help but think she's going to get sick & end up back in the hospital. She's not getting the RSV shots this year & that really makes me nervous. I wonder when that feeling will go away too...
