My son was born at 24 wks of gestation. He suffered a hemmorahge and had what is known as VP Shunt inserted into his brain. He spent a total of 4 months in hospitals before ever coming home. He is almost 4yrs old and doesn't really have great balance while he runs, jumping isn't so easy for him to do, and he can't hold up fingers to show 3, or 4. He can't not without the aid of his other hand to hold downthe fingers that re supposed to be down. Wondering what "complications" or minor issues other children deal with? I have never really talked about this to other Moms that don't have premie babies so any feedback would be helpful. Thank u..

My daughter was born 9 weeks premmie, weighed 3 pounds & 11 ounces, she had many challenges. She was not able to walk un-assisted, she needed support to sit up, drooled constantly, developmentally delayed, frequent body tremors, some seizure like episodes, kind of in a daze all the time, clenched left hand, choking on her food, speach problems, left side weakness etc. She was elevated on her toes when holding her to walk, she was splinted for a leg brace & they wanted to give her botox, but after researching botox and discovering how it’s made and there were no long term studies I decided against it. Her life was restricted & so was mine ...and it looked this way for the rest of her life ... & mine. I felt hopeless.

We were attending all sorts of treatments and therapies which cost a lot. A friend told me about some special wellness supplements from a particular company, she started taking them in her yogurt, after one week she was up walking un-assisted, it made an immense difference to her brain function, memory, balance, mood & cognition in a short space of time. I was elated!

I am so grateful to the person that told me about this incredible technology. She now has a life now ….. and so do I. It’s now over 14 yrs later and she continues to take these special nutrients, she has attended normal public schools, she is almost 16, in a few weeks she begins driving lessons and has just started an after school casual job in a fast paced food takeaway.

that sucks. We are very lucky here in Nz as premmies automatically have pediatrian and child development support up till 5 and further if they need it. We get physio once a week and they do regular development checklists etc to see where the children need help and support. I hope that you can get some answers soon as I know how frustrating it is waiting to get answers when you know something isnt right!!! Keep fighting for answers and I am sure you will get them!

Yes my son went thru the regional center I have brought up my concerns to the docs but it seems to me that I am told these things are to be expected. I don't have a pool near to use. I try physcial workouts with him and I. We play in our yard and I try helping him run, jump, flip from feet to back. I can't have him tested for c.p. cua we are thru the County. I am currently trying to fix our position in health care. But I feel like the state isn't as helpful as they say they can be.

Hi I have two babies 23m and 13m both born at 30weeks so not as prem as yours. My oldest our girl is fine just was a bit behind as to be expected with milestones but our wee man has Cerebal Palsey but hopefully only minor though we will have to wait and see. At 13 months he cannot sit unaided nor very well unaided unless sitting on you and he is not crawling yet. we hope he will be crawling by 2 and walking by 3 but we will see. He probably will have problems for the next few years with his physical development and motor skills but he has a wicked personallity and is bright as a button so it is only a minor in the long run. Have you talked to your pediatritian about your concerns? maybe looked into physiotherapy, swimming or gymnastics to help with his physical development?
