Encopresis, I have once heard they call it, "impacted colon, from holding it in, which results in seepage'. We have been going through this for 11 years now (and I'm forcing myself not to put that all in stretched out capital letters!)
However, I have to admit it was much worse when he was younger, at least now he's at an age where we can converse about it intelligently and maturely and he can (try) to remember to go everyday by himself, or if there was seepage, he can put his underwear into a bucket of water and soap to soak himself (he doesn't have to wash it). Seepage still happens at least once a week, or at the very least once a month.

At the moment we are not doing anything special, when he was younger, the specialist had him on daily suppositories and it was very traumatic to my son, and quite frankly I refuse to put him through that anymore! I'm so tired of inflicting trauma to my son, while I'm sure the "condition" with all its emotional implications has been a trauma in itself for him for most of his life! I make sure he gets lots fruit, bran for breakfast, and water, I don't keep cooldrink/sodas in the house, which forces all my kids to drink water. Is there anything else (non-traumatic) I can try, that anyone can tell me about?

Does anyone have older kids with this problem and has it gone away?

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

My 4 yo daughter has had issues with constipation since birth. We have also had many traumatic bathroom episodes. Her ped started her on Miralax which has helped tremendously. Now my problem is getting her not to go in her pants! Before she wouldn't go at all because it was painful and now I don't think she can feel herself go and we have accidents! At least she does not scream anymore when we go to the bathroom. The best part is that they now have a generic for Miralax that is about $5-$7 cheaper than the name brand. Good luck!

Hi Jacky,

My daughter has had constipation since she was a baby. She is 7 now and also had problems with wetting during the day and the night. We were finally referred to a Urologist who said she had overactive bladder syndrome. He put her on a medication for that and Miralax for her constipation. I don't know if you have tried this before, but it seems to be helping my daughter. I hope you find something that works for your son!
