12 year old son broke the NEW big Screen TV...

My son threw a PS3 remote control into the brand new 42" flat screen TV we bought 3 weeks ago. The TV will cost $1000 to fix and was only $679 to purchase in the first place. The extended warranty that we purchased doesn't cover accidents and we want my son to take responsibility for his actions and help us remedy the situation, however I don't think that me paying him for chores around the house is an acceptable answer seeing as how I would still be giving him the money for the TV. Any suggestions??

Find a volunteer organization, get him signed up for 6-8 hours a week. Figure out an "hourly rate", and for each volunteer hour he serves, he reduces his $1000 bill to you by that amount. And, make the volunteer opportunity one that he will learn multiple lessons from: a homeless shelter, or transitional shelter for families...one that will make him see how fortunate he is to even have a house/electricity, etc. Best of luck

Can your son baby sit or pick up the trash around your friends house to earn money. Maybe he can sell some of his stuff like the ps3 to earn some of the money. Maybe not letting him watch the tv for maybe a week or so don't let him use the remote controller for a while. I would not let him do chores around your house and you pay him. Let him do for others. Good luck

Another idea, sell ar donate this TV to TV servise and stay without TV for a while. Discus how and when you will all together collect money for new TV and why. Maybe you all need more time to talk with each other. Talk not argue!?

I hope he likes chores because he needs to do not only yours but your neighbors too. It's going to take a long time to make enough money to by a new one. What does he have that he can sell besides his PS3? If he lived at my house, he'd be having one heck of a garage sale to try to raise the money to pay for that. In no uncertain terms, I think he needs to pay you back in $$$. If you take the pay in chores, set a price per hour and stick to it. Don't have an arbitrary price for each chore. Any chore he was already expected to do, shouldn't be paid.
