Gift certificate is the best way to deal with it! I have two that are born on the same month. They both have different tastes. This way, they can buy whatever they need or want, and still be within my budget. Let them also know that you're on a budget, you'll be surprised to find out that they actually understand.

I have girl and boy twins. They are 18 now. I also am a single mom. I always did their parties together. They had a lot of mutual friends so it was easy. I also agree with Sonja - sit down and ask them for input. Being a single mom, you won't be able to do everything they want, but they can give you ideas on what would make it special for them. Good luck! By the way, I love your profile picture!

Have you asked them what would be special for them? I find my teens tend to really like being involved in the planning of their birthdays and appreciate the input. We did surprise them this last birthday by kidnapping them and taking them to Disneyland without their knowing. They loved it. We would have themed parties a lot as they were growing up. One that really stands out is the Lord of the Rings party we had for the both of them together. It was really fun. I made foods from Middle Earth. The boys dressed up...one as Frodo and the other Gandolf. They put on a theatrical presentation as Gandolf and Frodo from one of the scenes and then Gandolf performed magic tricks. We had games from Middle Earth, too. We ended up with over 40 kids and that didn't include the adults that came. It turned out to be a wonderful party.
