Bi-polar disorder

My son is 14 and has bi-polar disorder. He has been on medicine and in counseling for over a year now. It has helped but he still can be very hard to handle at times. He is always in trouble at school. Does anyone have any suggestions....I am open to almost anything.

I suggest doing everything that you are doing. I am an adult with bi-polar. I suffered from it as long as I can remember but have only been on meds that controlled me for 4 years. Just hang in there and remember, even when they are impossible to deal with, they just want to feel like they are understood.

My best advice is to talk to his doctor. It took a little less than a year for my daughter to be on an optimal dose of her meds. Also, because I believe that it isn't always about medication, see if there is something else going on - why is he getting in trouble at school? Is he getting teased, is the work area too difficult? Does he have other issues than bi-polar? Sometimes, there are secondary issues that go along with bi-polar and it would be a good idea to talk to him when things are calm. Just go to him and let him know you love him and are worried for him - ask him to be honest and tell you what's happening in school. That might give you more insight into what's happening.

My oldest (now 20) is bi-polar. It is very difficult. I had to learn a LOT of patience while he was home. We also prayed a LOT! Maybe the meds your son is on needs to be tweaked a little. I know once we got a good dosage things changed quite a bit. Unfortunately, my son's girlfriend convinced him he didn't need to be on meds and then talked him into moving out. Very sad. But, while he was taking them, he was a completely different kid...and he was learning to like himself! Good luck!!
