Body hair & shaving

I have a 16 year old daughter who won't hardly wear shorts in the summer (and Texas summers are HOT) or bathing suits because of her body hair. Last summer, I figured she didn't know how to shave properly, so I was going to help her..... she is intensely modest, but she put on a bathing suit, and off to the bathroom we went.

Well, let me say, it was really difficult! I kept shaving and shaving, and still prickly stubble was left behind. Her hair seems to grow in all directions, and she has a lot of it -- right up to her cheeks and lower back, too.

Has anyone else dealt with this much body hair? We have tried the hair removal spray, but that is pretty hit or miss, it certainly doesn't get it all. Shaving is difficult, particularly the back of the legs -- and no girl should have hair that high, right?

What can we do for her? Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

Thank you again, everyone, for responding. I have an appointment for her with a gynecologist over spring break. Her last period was heavy flow for well over a week, and she's very erratic on timing -- normal for teenagers, I'm sure, but add in the body hair issue that may be hormone related, and it won't be bad to get her looked at.

On the waxing, she has a very low pain threshold, and I cannot imagine that flying! Laser treatments are not permissable under age 18, but if hormones don't make the situation better, may start saving now and make that her high school graduation present!

Waxing is an option but it can be painful. you can get nair and use that, it will have the same effect and is painless. BUT Try a test place of skin to make sure that her skin won't react to it. I had that problem...after puberty it changed and there was a LOT less hair. I agree with the other moms, have the doc check to make sure she is balanced hormonally. If the testerone is too high, she will have extra body hair.

Let her try hair removal.. A lot less painful that waxing... Of course have her do a test to make sure she can use the product... Myself and my oldest can not use hair removal.. but my other 2 older children can..

Try Nair..

Good Luck and Best Wishes

Waxing! Just not at PMS time as your pain threshold decreases, when she is going to the salon - give her 2 paracetamol tablets to reduce the pain. 1st time is the hardest, other solution laser treatment-is expensive and you need one treatment per month for 6 months, where i live it costs $200 (aussie) per session, very successful.

I agree with the other moms to check hormones at the doc,as well as for the ovary disorder. But there are razors and shaving gels that work remarkably well.My sister has had hormonal problems with excess hair, and she always sings the praises of Venus razors and Skintastic shaving gel. After getting the smoothness desired, they have lotions for moisturization that have hair growth inhibitors in the lotion to slow regrowth.Hope I could help!

Shaving is the only way I know how...If she has hari growing in diffrent directions, that probably means she has tried shaving before, that has to be very hard for her...the only other thing I know is Nair lotion, unless you consider waxing and that hurts

Thanks to you both - I will ask about hormone issues with her doc, for sure. She's not so much on the pain tolerance threshold, so I'm not sure the full leg waxing would work well.

Take her to a salon and have her waxed. That will absolutely help. You might have to continue but as you continue, the hair growth slows. As well, I would check what Anne Bowness said about checking for polycystic ovary syndrome as this is defintely one of the symptoms. It's so hard to be that age and have these kinds of issues....teen years are hard enough without having to deal with unwanted body hair. Good luck!!!

Get her checked for polycictic ovary disease - common symptom!
