I think with a new diagnosis, the biggest way you could help is to learn the signs of low blood sugar and how to treat it. Also, how to use his meter in case he is feeling so bad that you need to do it for him. Other than that, you can educate yourself on carb counts, and understand that just because he has diabetes, doesn NOT mean he can't eat what he wants as long as he takes the necessary insulin.

Hi Patricia,

My husband has been type one diabetic for about 17 years and it is a challenge for him and me.

What helped us both, is we went through a diabetic class together and we went to a nutritionist.

I've learned how to cook for him.

Carb counting is a big deal and does help keep glucose levels under control.

I would recommend doing all the research you can.

Feel free to contact me anytime you need and I will try my best to help.

Good luck to you both.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Whatever you do, don't get sucked into the 'sugar free' trap. Many diabetics think that because the label says that the product is sugar free that they can eat it without worry, when in fact, the opposite is true. Many artificial sweeteners can be damaging to your body and actually cause you to crave more sweets and carbs. I read a report that said that the sweeteners used in diet sodas has been found to cause MS symptoms in some people. While your boyfriend won't be able to eat whatever he wants, he can find help to know what he can eat and what he should avoid. Going to a licensed dietician or his MD and asking questions is his best bet. Some areas have classes specifically for diabetics that are very helpful. While I am not a diabetic, I have many family members who are. I have seen them fall for the 'sugar free' trap. Another thing to avoid is a lot of fried foods. Believe it or not, it does affect your blood sugar levels. Good luck!
