How do I help with algebra homework?

My 13 year old girls are in the 8th grade and absolutly hate algebra. They are to the point that they can't even do simple math functions if it is in an algebra equation. Every night they completely shut down and spend hours sitting there staring at the page without attempting to do anyting. How can I help them without doing the homework for them?

The school should also offer some sort of tutoring. My oldest had a lot of trouble with algebra when she was in 8th grade. We struggled with teaching her forever. She ended up with a different teacher 2nd semester & WOW what a difference!!!! Sometimes it's all about the WAY it's being taught. Everyone learns differently. You just have to find the right fit!

Try using www.khanacademy.org you can click on a lesson (exponents) and it will come and give about a 7 min lesson with step by step instruction. It is very useful and will take you out of having to explain the process. I would have them look it up before they started their assignment for the night. I hope this is useful to you. Good luck.

There are simple, short demonstrations that might capture their attention and keep them from feeling overwhelmed. Dr. Math is another good resource, but can be lengthy and confusing to find any help on the website. You can buy books from Dr. Math, I have found those to be easy and friendly. Good luck.

Go to Khan Academy on the web. He has tons of videos by topic. There's another similar website, but I don't have it on me. Will submit soon. Good luck.

Try a website called www.coolmath.com my daughter uses it when she gets really stuck. You can even go to a free GED website and a lot o times it can break it down even simplier.
