My wonderful 16yr. old son has been suffering from depression for 4 months. He has gone from being an honors student to getting D's. He has major lack of motivation and concentration. He's taking med. and therapy. He seems to be doing a little better, but has bad days. We're very close and he asks for help when he needs me, he calls me "his rock", but his depression is taking a toll on me. It's hard to see him not being able to complete a simple homework. He's kind and maybe too mature for his age. He's been called "an old soul" and seems to feel better around adults than his own peers. He has low self-esteem. He's so stressed out just thinking about school. I don't know what else to do. Please give me some advice.

I know of a possible solution to your problem. If you are not sure whether your son needs professional help but would like him to be evaluated, send him over to the folks at Portrait Health. They've got a new program they are running for kids that may be depressed to receive evaluations without the social stigma of "therapy". It's an iPhone app course where kids will learn how to make iphone apps and receive psych evaluations at the same time. It's very important to intervene in the early stages of depression and make sure these signs are not ignored. The entire program is completely free and location is not an issue. Check out this press release for more information, or send me a message: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/portrait-h...

Best,

Cynthia

Just be there. Maybe get some therapy for yourself. A good counselor will be able to give you coping skills for yourself and for helping your son.
You're already doing what you can do. You're there for your son. You've gotten him the help he needs. The rest is up to him. But it sounds like he's off to a good start :)
