Why does my daughter seem so desperate to have a boyfriend?

In every observable way, my 13 year old seems perfectly content with her life. She has close friends, does very well in school, and is athletic and involved in sports. Her self-esteem seems wonderful, except for this undying need to have a "boyfriend." Bear in mind that "boyfriend" is merely a label. She isn't allowed to go out with boys. But she just seems so desperate to me. Is this a self esteem issue? Is she trying to fit in with other girls at school? More importantly, how can I change this?

At that age we don't really know we want.. I had a bf but now that I look back on it I didn't even know what that meant. She is probably just trying to go along with the crowd bcuz kids usually get a bf at that age. I would have a talk with her and just let her know that having a man is never necessary for happiness and she has plenty of time to date. She needs to worry about her studies and what she wants to do with her life.. ppl will come and go.
