why would a mom of a boy that broke up with my daughter not respond to me about picking up her stuff, but instead contacts my daughter

Oh, well, in that case, she's probably responding to your daughter, because it's your daughter's stuff.

I don't call parents to come get their kid's stuff, I call the kid. It's not the parental responsibility to run around picking up after our teenagers. So, she contacted the person who was responsible for the belongings.

We are contacting the mother to pick up our daughters things. She came over our house
to pick up his things. We would like our things back also.

Why would you be contacting his mother to come pick up his stuff? If you don't want contact with them, mail it back.
