How to meet local moms with highly gifted children in the same age range...

Hello everyone,

I just started reading some of the posts, and was really enjoying it. This seems like a great circle. I have two boys, 1.5 and 3.5, and I'm writing regarding my oldest. He'll be 4 in two months and he's been reading and writing in two languages since he was two and a half... He's now working on the multiplication table. I'm experiencing what a lot of you have been talking about - amazement at what he's doing, worry about what this is all going to mean - how we'll keep on challenging him at school, etc. Anyway, I'd love for him to meet other highly gifted children, so he can share his passions with kids his own age. Any idea how I can go about meeting such kids in our area? Thanks a lot for your help!

Hey there Maytal - I can't comment on finding smiliar kids - it's a serious issue I have too, and like you this board and certain members here have been my sanity savers! :)

Thanks Deborah and Jamie.  These are some great ideas.  I'll look for some local boards, and also, I forgot about the Davidson Institute.  I looked at their website a while back.  But now that we're getting closer to getting my son tested, it might be a good idea to look again.  I'm so glad I found this group.  I can't tell you how nice it is to finally 'talk' to people who are going through similar experiences, and understand that as much as this is a blessing, it comes with many challenges...

What a great idea Jamie ... I had not even thought to look at mom boards. But I do know it is hard to find children of the same age that are equal in intelligence. I live in an area that clearly has gifted children all around. Are they highly gifted? I really don't know. Katelyn is in a dance class and all the girls can count which shocked the instructor. But can they add and subtract like my toddler? I have no idea and will feel like such an obnoxious mom to ask such a question. You might want to look into the Davidson program when your child is school age. Once he is tested you submit for him to be a part of the group and I know that is one way a lot of parents have found like-minded kids for their children. They might not live in close range but they can meet during summer programs and make connections that way. But seeing that you live in LA you might be a lucky one in that you will be able to find more kids around.

Does your area have a local mom board?  Our newspaper sponsers a local mom message board online and that's how I found another mom that lives near me that has a highly gifted son.  It's nice to have somebody to talk to in person about everything.
