Diana Gabaldon series "The Outlander". It is takes place in the 1700's. The first four are about Scotland and their war with England. The next ones take place in the thirteen colonies right before the American revolution. They are all long books, 1000 pages, some gory or sexual scenes, so you should read them first. They are quite enjoyable.

Tamora Pierce is a good author, her books are more aimed at the 10-15 age range but most are about strong female characters.

Just remembered that Barnes and Noble has a great reading program this summer too...read 8 books and they'll give your kiddo a free book! You can download the form or pick one up in the store!

The Sisters Grimm series is wonderful; inventive, funny, a bit scary, just great. My daughter just finished the last book of the series and loved all of them. Also I second the recommendation about the American Girl books. And you may consider Judy Moody and/or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My daughter has enjoyed all of these. I have a bunch of Percy Jackson "Lightning Thief" books waiting for her when she gets a little older. Not sure if a 9 year old would be ready for those but they are pretty great. I have the Hunger Games trilogy waiting, too, until she's a little bit older.

Usually the local library has summer reading programs that tell you different books to read and they get rewards in the end for reading the recommended books! It's usually got fun activities to do as well! Good luck!

Also, if she likes mysteries, the Happy Hollisters and the Bobbsey Twins are a little dated but lots of fun (Nancy Drew was too scary for me at that age).

Anything by Edward Eager, E. Nesbit, and Elizabeth Enright. Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, Trumpet of the Swan. Wind in the Willows. The Redwall/Mossflower series (Brian Jacques). The Anne of Green Gables series, and pretty much anything else by L.M. Montgomery. The Maud Hart Lovelace books (Betsy, Tacy, and Tib). The "Shoe" books by Noel Streatfield. Jean Craighead George wrote a bunch of wilderness children books that are delightful, such as My Side of the Mountain. Louisa May Alcott.. I can give you a bunch more, if you need them - I have three sisters, and we were all big readers. :)

What do you give an 11 year old girl who has a reading level of a 10th grader? She reads books so darn fast I can't keep up. I like to challenge her, but not to be too complicated.

A friend's 10 year old just borrowed my daughter's copy of the first The Ranger's Apprentice book. Even though they are written for pre-teen/young teen boys, the girls are enjoying them. And so did I lol.

My daughter read all the Judy Blume Books (she's shouting out so many, I don't know if I can keep up, so here goes) Bunnicula, Matilda (ALL the Rould Dahl books); Lemony Snicket, Hank the Cowdog (there's a whole bunch of those; humorous, narrated by the dog); Harry Potter the series, Despairo, The Last Unicorn, The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, and that's all I can think of right now. Is she a reader? Get her started on what she likes, and she'll be a reader for life. Have fun!!

Anne of Green Gables series is perfect for that age. The Anne McCaffrey Dragonrider series for the younger crowd is good, too. I think they are Dragon Song, Dragon Singer, and The White Dragon. She can ignore the introduction if that's in the younger series, as it just tells how the people got to that planet, and can be a bit complicated.

My daughter and I just discovered a series of children's mysteries called A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy. There are 21 books in the series and we found them all at our local library. The chapters are not too long and the content is fun and age appropriate. We are having a good time reading them and trying to figure out "whodunit".

I just finished reading "The Hunger Games" triliogy. I found it to be quite good and a very easy ready. The first two books took me less than a day to read and the third two days. I also enjoyed the Dragonriders series by Anne McCaffery. There is around twenty books in this series. Her son has taken over the series recently. They will really enjoy it if they are into science fiction and fantasy books. I read them as a teenager and again as an adult and enjoyed them every timte. My favorite series is The Chronicle of Narnia. That series must be read the way it was intended by CS Lewis and not the way that he wrote them. The later books may be difficult as there are religious undertones. I did not understand the last couple of books until I was an adult, but they are still a good read.

She could check out the American Girl series or maybe The Babysitter's Club or Nancy Drew. There are lots of books in each of those series. I personally used to love The Babysitter's Club books when I was around that age. And also the Ramona series, Amelia Bedelia and Matilda are popluar. (At least they used to be)

Post a reply! Has she read the Little House On The Prairie series, my 9 year old loved every single book! She's moved on to the Goddess Girls collecion (based on Greek mythology) and the Enola Holmes Mysteries (Enola is Shirlock Holmes' little sister). She also just got the Harry Potter collection for her birthday (she turned 10 last week), but I'm not sure she's really ready to read those just yet.
