My son is a 6 year old 1st grader. He is currently reading at a 3rd grade level. The porblem I'm having is he can't find any books that he wants to read. He feels like story books are to babyish for him but the chapter books that he can read are over his head. He really liked the "Captian Underpants" series but he has read all of them. Now he is reading "Junie B Jones". I feel bad for him because there are so many books targeted towards girls and not that many for boys. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Entertaining and engaging is more important than challenging in childrens books. Go to a large library (even if you have to drive hours away) and let him look. Ask the librarian about books for a boy his age with his interests. His reading level should be considered, but don't let it narrow the choices. I think it is more beneficial for a child to read 10 books that are below his reading level that he really enjoys than 1 book at his reading level that isn't interesting to him.

Hi, I remember being very frustrated with books when my son was in first grade. He loved the "Magic Tree House" series. Another series I came acrossed was "Andrew Lost" by J.C. Greenburg - they are adventure books. Bruce Hale has a series "A Chet Gecko Mystery" - can't remember what age he started reading those, but he did like them. I share your frustration with reading materials in the classrooms they are not geared for GT kids. Whenever we had a book fair, or for Christmas I would always buy "boy appropriate" books - my son was very bored with al the Junie B. Jones and other girl titles. Another suggestion is to find a local Barnes and Noble and make friends with the children's manager, mine was very instrumental with books that were challenging.

My son was the same way always reading! He loved Junie B Jones, Captain Underpants, Judy Blume. but his new favorite is The Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne! She has 43 books in the series so far so it will take a while for him to read through it. These books are great because the are adventure books so the kids enjoy them but they also teach history. The books are about 2 kids who travel through a magic Tree house. I highly recommend it and my son loves them!!

That sounds like something he might like. Do you know who the author is?

my son likes the diary of a wimpy kid series. Check these out.

I have the same issues finding books that are more challenging yet appropriate and geared towards boys. Mine is 9 and reading at about a 9th grade level. The wimpy kid books are below his reading level....but he finds them very entertaining. They might work for your son.
