My 11 year old just started her period. When can she start using tampons? Right away or when she's older? She isn't in gymnastics or on the swim team.

Hi, I am a nurse who has been working with adolescents.  It's all about her comfort level.  She could start at any time there is no specific age and she might want to this summer when it's time to go swimming for fun :).  I would just take the time to sit with her, show her a small slender teen sized tampon and explain how and why they are used.  Hope this helped, good luck!

my daughter is also 11. and some a time ago, we had a great discussion over tampons vs pads.  explaining both, both pros and cons, she made the choice for tampons.  i  bought the very small extra light ones and keep them handy whenever we are away from home.  she is not starting to develop, so i will have to talk to her about when she would like to start carrying menstration protection in her own purse.
