I have been dealing with a herniated disc, arthritis, and degenerative disc disease (DDD) for almost 4 years as a result of a hit-and-run car accident. At the time, I didn't have health insurance at the time and my car insurance company wouldn't pay for anything ( I had to sue them). The ER was not able to find anything wrong with my back or neck so I went to my regular doctor who did an MRI. They started to try and treat me with pain meds and muscle relaxers, but it wasn't working. I went to a chiropractor who was able to help me some with altered adjustments and massage therapy, but it got too expensive. I only ended up getting $500 from my car insurance after attorneys fees and doctor bills and I didnt have any medical insurance. I went for almost 3 1/2 years with no health insurance, trying to find someone willing to take a self-pay patient to help me with my pain or fix the problem, but was unsuccessful.
I have a 4 1/2 year old and a 9 week old and it is very hard to do daily things with them because of the pain. I have good days and bad days (sometimes weeks) and I get really depressed and tell myself that I am a bad mom. I have been to several pain doctors and even surgeons only to be turned away and told that " I am not bad off enough" to do anything and that I can't afford the treatment/surgery I need. It has been very hard the last few years and I have ruined my credit from ER bills and tests that I've had done.
The silly thing is, now I have a medical card and I have tried going back to some of the doctors I had seen in the past to get this problem taken care of, and they still refuse to help me. I tell them every time just how much it affects my life and that I am only 24 years old and too young to be disabled already. I was working as a Certified Medical Assistant, but it has been hard to keep a job because of my physical and anxiety problems I have now as a result of the pain. I want to go back to school to become an RN, but I would like to have the back surgery I need first since being an RN requires you to be on your feet all day and that is impossible for me right now.
It just seems like no matter where I go or what type of insurance I have, I cannot get any help from anyone. VERY frustrating!
