Does anyone worry about our teens or others living with us getting into our meds and using them to get high? I have a troubled teen living wtih me from time to time and I wonder if she might ever be tempted? I take a narcotic and would not want her getting into that. I could lock it up but do not know if she would even try.

Quoting Mary:

It all goes with how much u trust your teenager. I have chosen to not use any narcotics at all because of this reason(huge sacrafice). I trust all my children with out a doubt but the you never know hangs out in the back of your head. We never know what a child is going to do if they give in to pear pressure. In my sons school parents meds r the drug of choice for these children so I prevent this by having none. Good luck with this I have a few friends that there children have taken there meds.

i think u should just get a safe there cheap and work well.i had one because i had teens and they always had friends over.don;t do without.

I was guilty of leaving my meds out. I never had a problem, but drugs were not a problem with my kids. If anything, they saw how much I had to take and were turned off by it. If there were going to be other people in the house though, then I put them away.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea of NOT taking meds you need just to keep temptation at bay. Making such a huge sacrifice on your part hurts not just you, but your family as well when you aren't able to function because of pain. A simple but sturdy lock box, put in an out of the way place, with the keys never out of your posession.....I know they say that part of parenting is sacrifice, but should suffering in real physical pain be part of that?

I agree with what others have said. Better to lock them up and remove any possible temptation than to possibly have a rude awakening (and a lack of meds) down the road. From what I've heard and read, doctor's generally won't replace lost or stolen meds, even if a police report was filed. This isn't saying that the teen WILL get into it (or any other person who may come into your home), but in any household with children of any age, locking up narcotics is the safest way to go!

Our daughters are adults now but I never worried about them getting into my meds. NO I was not in denial that it could happen. My older sister has had been suicidal for years and has "played" in her meds for years. ( She is paranoid schizophrenia and the voices have played a big part in her suicide attempts) so they have witnessed first hand what taking too much meds or the wrong ones can cause.

I have a large lock box for medications. its a habit. and the only nonprescription pain killer kept in the house is panadol (because my mother is highly allergic and cant even manage to swallow one)

cash boxes are handy for this and relatively cheap, also the aluminium tool boxes the basic ones from the hardware store. and they come with keys also.

I know this from taking care of people who are suicidal and with other psychiatric conditions. don't wait to find out they have. just keep all meds and alcohol secured. in a locked cabinet or locked box. the child locks for cabinets are pretty useless anyway kids will get into them. just make sure it is all properly secured in the first place.

i agree with misty---avoid the temptation before it starts. i've had almost a full bottle of darvocet stolen out of my bathroom cabinet before by someone who stopped by to use my bathroom. he never would admit it---but i am happy to say that he has been in treatment and is now very straightforward with us and has actually admitted to us now that he took those meds to give to a friend of his. we hope his progess continues.

It's best to discourage temptation before it starts. You don't need to say anything at all. Just lock 'em up and keep the key(s) where only you know where they are. God bless you!
