Before my son died in September, I had never heard of the Toxic gas theory and mattress wrapping. The therory and mattress wrapping method was started by a Dr. in New Zealand 11 years ago, and the SIDS rates have dropped significantly there. My son died at his babysitter's house, sleeping in a pack and play that had been used by several other babies. I thought that clean sheets were enough. Nothing has made sense to me why my healthy 15 week old baby died. I feel with my whole heart that his death could have been prevented, had I known that babesafe mattress covers existed. I have never heard any other parent, or SIDS parent talk about it. I asked myself why then, if something so inexpensive and simple could maybe prevent the death of an infant, did I never hear of this? His theory is not accepted worldwide, but there are facts that have been proven. Our mattresses are made with hazardous fire retardant chemicals that let off toxic nerve gases when fungus is present. It happens in used mattresses and in new mattresses as our babies use them. Even if it doesn't explain all SIDS deaths, I think they have something here. The belief of many supporters of the theory is that finding a "cure" for SIDS will put many people out of work. Millions of dollars every year are put toward traditional SIDS research organizations, and they ignore the toxic gas theory. Also, if our government acknowledged this theory, they would be admitting liability, as they mandated that fire retardant chemicals be put in the mattresses in the first place. I am fired up about this because it is a simple preventative measure that I was not aware of. These mattress covers certainly can't hurt a baby, so why not use them for peace of mind? It is my mission to tell as many parents as I can about this product. If it can possibly save your baby, why not? It costs 30 dollars! Please, everyone go to this website and do some research of your own. It is very important! Then, go tell ALL of your friends that have children. It can't hurt. I wonder, if more and more people start using these mattress covers in the US, what would happen to our SIDS rate? Think about it. Here's the website: www.prevent-sids.org
