I've been unable to find if I can safely get tattoed while breastfeeding my daughter. I know that I can't get a tat while pregnant, but I'd like to know if it is safe for me to get some more ink while she's still feeding. Does ink cross over to breastmilk????

i got a huge chest piece while i was breastfeeding... the tattoo artist said its just a precaution but its not dangerous or going to harm the baby... doctors worry because of the risk you take when you get tattoos in the first place (dirty needles) and you passing the risk to your child if you do get sick

No, you cant get a tattoo. Your risk of getting an infection is higher, because your immune system is suppressed after pregnancy, and while breast feeding. Plus your body does go into a mild state of shock while getting tattooed, and believe it or not, this can seriously affect your milk production. Most reputable tattoo artists wont tattoo you until you have stopped breast feeding for a month.

I was told by my doctor that it was safe to get a tattoo while breast feeding just to take every precaution to keep it healthy and know the artist and the shop and make sure its all clean and sterile. There is always a risk involved when getting tattooed weather you are breast feeding or not. Its up to you. It will not affect your milk unless you get an infection. you just need to take really good care of your self and your new tattoo in order to stay healthy while breast feeding. i've had a few doctors tell me its okay and to use my best judgment with the shop and artist.

Hey I would like to comment on this. I had my baby in September and I contacted the place where I get tattooed who work a long side with the hospital where I live for tattoo safety. In the early part of this year I went in to get tattooed and they were able to do it. There was no problems from getting it done my breast feeding wasn't troubled at all, and there was no problems with my daughter either. Most tattoo ink is made up of natural ingredients as well.

There is no solid information as to whether ink ingredients can get into breastmilk. I wouldn't do it. Wait it out and be safe.

I wouldnt do it just in case. It's not suppose to enter the blood stream but if it didn't then why do we sometimes bleed after a tat and why wouldnt we be able to get one while pregnant?

this is why I came on here tonight, to ask the same question. I saw my artist when baby was 4 months old and was told no, I couldn't get tattooed. I am only breastfeeding 1-3 times during the night and the piece I want is the celtic motherhood knot on my wrist. This will be my 6th tattoo and I have never had any problem with infection and generally heal really quickly. In Canada the safety guidelines are pretty strict. I was hoping to be done BF by now, but no such luck.

Wow, thank you! I had no idea I'd have to wait for so long after her birth to get more ink, I've already been breastfeeding for a year and thought because she only fed morning and night I'd be able to get one done in the morning so I was free of cortisol producing stress by 8 hours later. That bums me out a bit, I was really looking forward to getting her name and birthday. Oh well, one more year to wait...
