I am busy doing research on piercings and tattoos (more out of personal curiosity than anything else). That is why I’m asking (very nicely) for moms and dads to please take a bit of time to answer the following questions. Please feel free to pm me if you don't want to supply answers in public. I am planning on collecting these questionnaires until the 30th of November 2009. I will be writing an article with my findings and I will let you know when it has been published.

Thank you so much for the time that you spent on this questionnaire.

Regards

Sumanda Maritz

1. Where do you live? (Only country, province/state and city)
~ whiteville, NC

2. Do you see yourself as high, middle or low income?
~was low, but now I'm more to middle and working towards high ♥

3. Do you have any piercings and where?
~yes: one belly ring, one nose stud (right side), four in the ears (two a piece in lobes), and a tongue ring.

4. What age are your children and are they male or female? (Eg. M-10 of F-12)
~M-3

5. Do any of your kids have piercings and where? Eg. (M-10 – none, F-12 – two in each ear)
~m-3 none...yet ♥

6. Which piercings would you allow for your daughters and which for your sons?
~daughter and sons are allowed to have whatever they want, as long as they are old enough to understand the decision, and pay for it.

7. What are your reasons for this?
~ I paid for everything I have, and i was 18 or older when I got them, and i worked to pay for them -- that way there was more meaning and responsibility to me (plus my mom hated them all and refused to pay for 'defiling my temple' lol)

8. Which age do you think is acceptable for piercings for your daughters and what age for your sons?
~depends on the piercing. i had my ears peirced when I was six. I think ears are fine before 18, but only when the child is old enough to make that decision their self, then take care of them.

9. What is the reason for this decision?
~ I will not do anything like that to my children until they are old enough to want it. I refuse to push anything on them, I want them to grow and mature into their own person, not a replica of me or peers. If my son wants to do ballet instead of football, then fine, we'll sign him right up! etc.

10. Do you have a tattoo?
yes, three. One on each shoulder blade and one across my lower stomach from hip bone to hip bone.

11. Do any of your children have tattoos?
~lol, no -- he's three.

12. Would you allow your child to get a tattoo?
~when he's old enough to sign for himself, sure.

13. What age do you think is acceptable for tattoos and why do you think so?
~18+. And i do discourage such ones like face tattoos or whatever would cause them to be prejudiced against, especially in the working world.

14. Do you think there is a difference on tattoos for boys and girls?
~no, not really. I've seen all kinds of tattoos. Tattoos are male or female oriented, it's art that appeals to one's inner nature usually (hopefully with meaning).

I hope I helped! Now that I work from home, i don't have to worry about prejudice on mine because I'm my own boss, and i don't care how much money we have -- if my son grows up to want that stuff, he can pay for it himself. ♥ I did. and the same thing goes for his first car and everything else. I'll co-sign for him on the car, but he's still going to get a job and pay for it, it will teach him responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.]

1 - I'm originally from Denver, Colorado, USA.

2 - Middle income.

3 - Yes, I have two piercings in each ear and one in my hood.

4 - M 2

5 - Not yet.

6 - For both they are allowed their ears until they get their own jobs and money.

7 - Because piercings can always heal and I'd rather them do temporary things like dying hair or piercing than permanent stuff they may regret later. Gauging will have to wait until 18 or out of the house though, mostly because it can effect job situations.

8 - Daughters need to be able to truly understand how to care for them and want them bad enough, after a time of consideration I will allow it if they've earned the privilege or for a present. For sons I may wait until high school with a similar consideration, but the time condition may change depending on circumstance.

9 - I just feel like those are acceptable and fair conditions.

10 - Yes, I have two.

11 - No, if my two year old had a tattoo I'd pummel the person who did it.

12 - After 18 and plenty of consideration for what they are getting and that it means something special to them, also that they would want it for the rest of their lives.

13 - 18 because it's the general age of consent, but there are always individual circumstances.

14 - Regrettably yes, mostly it is cultural acceptability difference. It's changing though :o)

At 16, wherever she likes (if I have a son, same rule). Before 16 up to 2 sets in the ears.

Schools tend to have rules against numerous piercings. I played sports and needed to remove all during games...this is something I'd want them to have to avoid if they choose to play sports.

8. Which age do you think is acceptable for piercings for your daughters and what age for your sons?
16 for anywhere...boy or girl.

At 16 I think they've had time to choose piercings for personal desire versus fads.

10. Do you have a tattoo?
15

11. Do any of your children have tattoos?
Noooo...that would be pretty illegal (LOL)

12. Would you allow your child to get a tattoo?
I'd allow it at 16, however where we live you must be 18 to legally have it done.

13. What age do you think is acceptable for tattoos and why do you think so?
16, I think she'd be ready to make that decision for herself, although we'd need to discuss what she's getting so its not something she'll later regret.

14. Do you think there is a difference on tattoos for boys and girls?
I don't but I think society sees it differently.
