I really have an issue with the controversy over women getting tattooed while pregnant. There are so many different arguments that arise, but here is my defense: (keep in mind i have never gotten a tattoo while i was pregnant)

The issue that most people seem to have with it, is the possibility of getting diseases from the needles. Ok. Fair enough. But most people are smart. They check out the places they are using before they jump on the table. #2. You can contract Hepatitis and AIDS (and lie diseases) from a needle EVEN WHEN YOU AREN'T PREGNANT! So if you have tattoos at all, your baby may already be in danger!!!

I don't have any issue with women getting tattoos while they are pregnant. But i want to see what the community says.

I have to ask, unis got a tattoo and Iam 22 Weeks preggo..would anyone say that makes me a bad person or mother? This is not my first child I also have a very smart happy and healthy 9 year old daughter. The tattoo isn't big at all it's on NY wrist and put no stress on me because I have other tattoos and it does not hurt me. I just would like to know if people consider me a bad parent for making the decision to get a tattoo while pregnant?...

There is the added pain and stress the body goes through. But also I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, the body kinda loses some immunity during pregnancy which could make the moms tats heal slower and might increase the chances of an infection.

I have also heard that when getting a tattoo it causes most people's blood pressure and "stress level" to go up. This has nothing to do with your pain tolerance or anything like that, it's just your body's natural reaction to "tense up". Obviously we all know excessive amounts of stress is not good for baby when your pregnant. This is sometimes a concern for pregnant ladies. I personally don't like getting tattooed while I'm pregnant due to this.

just a heads up-the ink DOES NOT go in your blood or travel through your blood stream. It only goes to the first 2 layers of skin. If it were in your blood stream that would be lethal...

I have quite a few tattoos, however both times i was pregnant i stopped getting tattoos & piercings until after my kiddos were born, I personally never felt like it was a good choice to be tattooed during pregnancy because it dose put stress on your body and you feel all kids of different emotions ect. some spots are a little more tender than others & I have always felt that your baby feels what you feel so if your stressed, they will be stressed ect.

We do things everyday that we wouldn't do while pregnant. The reason we skip some activities during pregnancy is because the one in a million chance risk outweighs the benefit. Prevention is so simple. Our bodies are working so hard to create our babies that our immune systems become compromised and much more sensitive to additional stressors. Risks of getting tattooed while pregnant vary. It isn't about dirty needles! It's about your body being weak and a simple tattoo that would ordinarily heal without any problems could become infected more easily or be slow to heal. Also the stress or pain experienced could cause preterm labor. The point is that our bodies are working really hard to ensure our babies come out perfect... Why would we want to distract from that by making them work even harder? In the end it just isn't wise. We all make our own choices about what we are comfortable with exposing our babies to in the womb and throughout life. Each individual will have to live with the consequences of their decisions. I don't wanna judge, just personally wouldn't want to do anything to compromise the best chance my baby has to develope to their best potential. I wouldn't want to live with kind of regret should something go wrong.... Especially the kind of guilt that is permanently engraved on my body. As for nursing... I got tattooed when my first son was 4 months old and still BF. it was on my right forearm. Just made it tough to hold him comfortably for a few days. Otherwise all seemed to work out with it.

I have heard that the pregnancy hormones can also affect how your skin takes the ink. That alone would put me off getting inked during pregnancy!

I got a tattoo while i was pregnant but i had to have been "2 weeks". If I would've known I wouldn't have gotten it. It took so long to heal and it didn't hardly hold any ink. But my baby is healthy!!!!!

Most responsible tattoo artists wouldnt even contemplate inking a pregnant woman!!!

I personally would not even be that worried about the infection chance, what stops me is that the ink is like poison and travels in your blood and your blood travels threw the baby in your belly. To me alone that is enough cause there is always the ink in your blood and then on top of that a chance to get infections.

I would never even consider getting a tattoo whilst pregnant! Would you drink or smoke?? So why get a tattoo?! Surely a woman can wait at least 9 months!!

My father is a health inspector, and I asked him about this one day. He said, yes as long as the equipment is sterilized and needles are new, there normally wouldn't be a problem. However, there is always a chance of getting an infection, even with proper equipment. The infection is the dangerous part, it puts your body under so much stress.

I personally would not want to get a tattoo while pregnant and most respectable shops wont do it either. And I wouldn't want to go to a shop I didn't consider respectable because I wouldn't trust how clean it was. And depending on if you care what people think of you or not someone who does get a tattoo while pregnant will probably be looked down upon because there is already a negative association with it. Not saying I would, but just what I think the general community would.

Ah yeah I would rather not risk a miscarriage for something that can wait , what is the rush ?

Something as intense as tattooing can put your body into labour as well during pregnancy, your immune system already has to work overtime to protect both you and your baby. If you get an infection during pregnancy, your immune system has to fight the infection for both of you. There is also some risk to your baby if you do get an infection during pregnancy, depending on the type of infection and the severity of the infection.

Some women are concerned about the effects of the tattoo ink on their pregnancy. While there is no hard research that suggests a danger from the ink, there is not any research that suggests that it is safe, either. Here again, it is probably best to err on the side of caution, because there just isn't enough data to tell us conclusively that the ink is safe for a pregnant woman.

Most reputable artists will refuse anyway , I wouldn't rtust one that would tattoo a pregnant woman anyway , a bit of common sense goes a long way .

I just had a baby 4months ago and before i got pregnant i was working on my sleeve. I researched getting tattooed while pregnant and decided against it not because of the chance of hepatitist i trust the place i go to but just because i was not sure about the side effects if any the ink can have on my growing baby. Also most places will not tattoo a pregnant women at least my artist would not but i feel its a personal choice i have been in to the tattoo shop and seen a pregnant girl getting tattooes by a different artist she just had to sign a waiver.

Getting a tattoo while pregnant is NOT a good choice. Aside from the obvious blood born disease aspect, (depending on how your body handles pain) you can either cause a miscarriage or go into early labor.

I think also, a tattoo, peircing all those puts alot of stress on the body (at least for some people) and thats one of the other reason why they say not to get tattoos durning pregnacy. I cant say i would get one done while pregnant. but i wouldnt judge someone who did either. I think its really a personal choice. and i agree about the already in danger thing. That is a very good argument.

I agree with you. All who are getting tattood before or after pregnancy are already taking a risk at what might happen. I am a perfect example for that. I have 4 tattoos and I got all of them before I got pregnant. I am now 30 weeks pregnant and I would like another one for my daughter and fiance but NEVER would I get a tattoo during pregnancy.

I don't know if I would get a tattoo while I was pregnant just out of fear my child would be the the one in a million that would get sick or something...LOL But as far as getting tattoos after or before...O yea I'm all for that! But I do agree with you on the fact if people are smart they check out the place before they get a tattoo there. And there is always that chance you could get some kind of disease from the needles but if your not comfortable with how that place does things then go some where else.
