Bumber pads. To use or NOT to use?

My LO is a wiggle worm and goes all over the crib from one corner to another all night long! I had some nice thick bumper pads in there and took them out to wash... thank goodness i did... that night i woke up and her face was planted where the bumper would have been! Talk about scary. The only thing now is that she hits her head on the slats of the crib... I didn't put the pads back in in fear of her suffocating, but between bumping her head, poking her arms through the holes and losing her paci behind the crib (requiring me to crawl under the crib at least once a night) I'm not sure about what to do. I'm considering getting one of those breathable bumpers? is it worth it? I read somewhere that it can actually increase the chance of SIDS because it traps the CO2 even more!?!?! I wish i could remember where I read that. Please help, not sure what to try... maybe just leave things the way they are and deal with purchasing enough paci's so I don't have to crawl under the crib every night? LOL. Thanks ladies!

oh, just found another option, but super expensive... wonder bumpers...

We use the breatheable bumpers and love them. Our LO likes to sleep against the sides of the crib, but this keeps him safe and comfortable... and the pacis staying in is an added bonus.

We use the breathable bumpers for both boys and most nights they get squished down so they are not breathing into them, but also somehow keep all their limbs inside the crib... the one night I decided that it was time to take the bumpers off because I thought they had outgrown them, I went in to check on them and they had limbs sticking out so the bumpers went back on! My boys are 16 months and have had bumpers on since they started sleeping in their cribs.

I read up on bumpers and SIDS before I had my second child (I used them from birth until we lowered the mattress with my first). My conclusion was that increases the chance of SIDS very slightly. My compromise was to keep them out of the crib until she started rolling over, at which point she started getting caught in the slats, so I put them in.

I have had a crib bumper in my son's bed ever since he was born. Once he started rolling around his favorite place to go to was the corners of his crib and would put his face in the corner. I was a little concerned about him suffocating but then I realized if he can put himself in that position then he can get himself out. He rolls around some much anyway that he doesn't stay in spot very long. My son also loves to play peek-a-boo. He will put blankets over his own head and pull them off. That made me feel a whole lot better because I know that he can get himself out. I wouldn't worry about suffocation if your baby is able to roll around on her own and can move things away from her face.

I would just have a back up paci on the bedside table (or two or three) so you can look for them in the morning! Makes life a little easier for you. I would also just stay away from bumper pads. I would rather my little one deal with a couple of small bruises to the forehead than suffocate. I actually don't use a crib for my little one though, I have a graco pack and play with mesh sides. This way, no arms getting caught, soft sides to bump against and it is sturdy enough for her to stand up in and crawl around in.

I have used and am still using a bumper with all three of my kids. My daughter who is 15 mos old still has one in her crib specifically to keep all of her pacis in her crib so she can find them. I have used it from day 1 and never had any problems. However, you have to do what you feel is best for your daughter. Good Luck!!

I actually just put my bumper in. My son is 8 months and he was constantly getting caught in the slats of the crib because we did not have anything there. the NICU nurses had said that they were not recommended anymore. So I didnt have it in. Now I figure that he can roll everywhere and can move things away from his face so I put it in. I was only going to leave it there until I got one of the mesh bumpers but then decided against it. we are fine with this one. I have a friend though that loves her mesh bumper!!!
