How many of you work a part-time or full-time job during your summers off from teaching?

I've worked my teaching job and a part time night job at a restaurant for over three years now, and yes, I work both during the summer. I take all the classes offered by my district during the summer, and work my restaurant job. I am a single mom of two girls. :)

The past couple years I haven';t but this year I have hit a serious financial crisis due to unexpected rx costs. I am adjunct so i don't get healthcare. I am thinking of working at Starbucks next summer. Those ladies always looks like they are enjoying themselves.

I work a part time job, through the same school district as I teach in, teaching swimming lessons. It still allows me to work with kids. I get my afternoons off. It only goes for 6 weeks. And it pays really well. (we usually use the money yo pay for our summer vacation) I have it made!! And I love it!!!

No way! Time to spend with my own children, time to recharge, very precious time! And one of the perks of the job!

I did before I had my baby. My principle could always count on me to teach summer school, but not this summer. This is my first child, I just had him June 1st so I wanted to stay home with him this summer. I'm not sure about next year though.

Before I was married I worked summers. Now, I use my summers to revitalize and reconnect with myself and my family. Also, for the last two summers I have been in grad school, so that took up my time.

During the year, I work at an occupational therapist every other weekend, and I'll continue to do that through the summer, but I won't work during the week.

I worked summer school every summer for the first 13 years I taught. Then, since the pay rate did not increase, but day care expenses did it got to the point where I would be paying to work, so I stopped. I stay home with my own kids in the summer time. And, I wouldn't have it any other way anymore. We do all kinds of things around the area in which we live. I will never get this time back with my kids and soon they will be at the age where they don't want to do things with me so working is not worth what I would lose in the long run.

I haven't all these years-I have 4 kids to drive here and there. Now that 2 of them are older and can now drive I have started tutoring this summer. I have 8 students that I am helping. It has been going very well-so glad I tried it:)

I work summer school-I took a position as an aid to take some of the pressure off of myself. Earning some money and only working 3 days a week for 3 weeks...think I can handle that!

I have done both. working summer school usually depends on what is going on in my life at the time. I've worked during the summer on years that we want to go on a vacation. Summer School gives me the vacation money we need. This summer, however, we just had a baby. So, I'm staying home. But, we will not be going anywhere on vacation. when I do work it, I enjoy summer school. I am off around lunch time, so I still have all afternoon to play with my daughter and go do stuff such as swimming and museums. Also summer school for my district is only 4 weeks, so I still get 6 weeks of fun.

Too busy looking after and entertaining my own two!
Also its good not to have to plan, mark, get stressed!!! for a few weeks. I usually catch up with all those people I am too busy to see during term time!

I do work in the summers, but I stay away from working with kids--I need a break. This is my first summer as a mom and as of now I am working just two evenings and Saturdays, so I am still home with my son during the day. We'll see how it goes, but I think it is good for me to get out of the house!

I am very much looking forward to my summer off to spend some quality time with my 9 month old! I taught summer school last summer, but only to off-set the unpaid part of my maternity leave that I took at the first part of the school year. One more day!

Unfortunately, I cannot find work. I would like to work part time during the summer months to keep bills current, but it is hard to compete for summer temp work.

I don't work during the summer holidays, I make the most of this by spending all my time with my children. I am very lucky!!

Yes, if I didn't we wouldn't be able to pay our bills. I work part time at a restaurant all year, nights, to pay bills. Wish I could have summers off, that would rock!

No, never. I like to stay home with my kids. Also, my school pays over 12 months which makes life easier.

I take the summers off. I am super lucky, our district divides our pay into 12 equal checks and I save all year long.

I don't usually. I enjoy the time off, but this summer, I may not have a choice. I wasn't able to save as much during the school year as I would have liked to. I work for a Head Start program and we do not receive any pay during the summer.

I teach summer school every year. It is only in the mornings for the month of June and I make quite a bit of money doing it.

Not usually, because I try to get all of those things done that usually take a sick day during the school year, so it ends up being pretty action-packed!

Nope. I stay home with my kiddos during the summer. I have a 6 year old & a 16 year old. My husband has worked off shore 14/14 since my oldest was 4, so I am a single mom for half the year...Summer is the best time I can enjoy my boys, so I take it while I can get it.

When I was single I worked summer school and loved the extra pay. But now married with kids, I love to stay home and spend time with my family, going on vacation and taking them to fun play dates that I cant do during the school year while I work. My principal tried to make me and another teacher with kids teach summer school. We told him that there were other teachers that didnt have children at home that could do that... and it was outside of our contract time... I dont think that he can MAKE us teach summer school because of that. He didnt force the issue, and the other three teachers in our dept with grown kids are teaching summer school, so I didnt worry about it.

I stopped teaching summer school when I became a mom 5 years ago. Prior to that, I taught summer school not necessarily for the extra income, which is certainly helpful, but becasue I was bored.

I usually stay home during the summer. It is my time with my kids. this year I am attending a training that pays a stipend for a couple of weeks and then the rest of the summer we are home.

[deleted account]

I need my summers to rejuvenate! And I like to be a "stay at home' mom during the summer so I can do all the fun stuff with them that I miss out on during the school year. I'd really burn out if I worked during the summer!

I work at the daycare that my daughters go to, to help them out while everyone takes vacation. I hate it, but they owner is such a sweet and kind woman that I just can't say no.

As a mom with a toddler, I do not work at all during the summer. Summer time should be your time to spend with the family. After getting pregnant, I did not return to teaching/working for the summer.

I usually work summer school every year. Sometimes, I offering tutoring services on the side, but its based on my own schedule. It's a good way to earn some "play" money to be able to spend however on whatever I want =)
