I work at the school full time as a substitute teacher K-12. Then I come home to 3 boys...12, 10, and 3. My husband works away from home for 7 days and then is home for 7 days....i guess you could say I am a part-time single mother.

I'm new here to this Circle of Moms. But, just wanted to answer Jenny. and agree partly with Aimee.

So, the best thing is the flexibility especially if your school district allows you to check jobs available on the computer...then you can see all the grades/choices ahead of time.

I have an 8 year old, and I've set up afterschool/on campus extra curricular activities..(i.e. art, band, choir, etc.whatever your kid's school offers) That usually lasts about an hour/sometimes an hour and a half after school...just enough time for me to finish notes for the teacher I subbed for, get my timesheet and drive across town to pick her up.

I like it too...no lessons/grades/etc.

Another thing is to get "in" with your kids' school and the teachers/volunteer sometimes...then they remember you....make your smiling face familiar to the head secretary of the schools you like best or are close to your home....then they remember to call you first...again...volunteer to work the "cum folders" room (if you're fully credentialed) or put mail away (again for the schools you really like and want to work at...)

Suprisingly enough, depending on your personality...don't be afraid to sub at high schools for subject matter you're not necessarily an expert at...I've learned a lot just going into classes like that (i.e. Calculus/Physics/)the kids often are so independent with AP coursework, that sometimes they teach you...and you can have some really interesting "grown up" conversations about history/politics, etc., so it keeps you well-rounded, too.

Special Ed/Learning Centers always love to have familiar faces for consistency, so if it ends up being your "thing", then you offend get to enjoy small one-on-one or one-on less than 5....if you like small groups...

So, there's my humble opinion...

I like it...I just wished it paid more :-(

Coming home to the little ones can be a challenge. Some days are better than others. What is nice-I don't have to work on lesson plans, grading papers, grades, etc. We do well as long as we stick to our routine.

I love subbing. I am working on obtaining my full certification and going full time next year. I have an 8 1/2 year old, 4 1/2 year old and a 13-month old. It is sometimes hard to work with the little ones all day and then come home to my little ones. Have you ever experienced that?

Oh heavens it is the best job i've ever had. I bought myself a personal computer that i take with me daily and i READ...the younger grades are busy, but when you get with the older children it can be a bit boring. I love the idea of not knowing where I am going on MOST days. Sometimes I get settled in a Home Room, get everything out, and they call b/c someone needs me. Teachers will LOVE you!!!! I tell the older students-"if it doesn't get me in trouble, it won't get you in trouble"!!!!

But my three year old was fired from day care, I may have to quit my job :(

Aimee,

I currently babysit in my home. I'm considering becoming a full-time substitute but an concerned about the uncertainty of subing. How does that work for you? Not knowing where you'll be until the morning of or mayber the night before has to be crazy?
