My son just had his first friend sleepover-but I was a wreck :) He is very mature and knew he would not need me, and it was only a few minutes away from my house. It was also with a family that I knew. He is 7 1/2.

There are several factors that play into this decision. You need to be really confident about the people who'll be supervising your child, first of all, and the details and circumstances of the place your child will be. The maturity level of your child, his or her sense of right and wrong, good manners, ability to speak up for himself, also should be factors. Some children are confident, comfortable, and independent (of you) enough to go overnight at 5. Others may not be ready until 7, or 9, or even later. This is something you have to work out with your child, and use your mother's intuition, too! I think it's a good idea to be available to pick your child up late at night when first visits are too hard for them. This is part of a growing process, and shouldn't be a big deal "if at first you don't succeed." Be encouraging and loving, and try again another time.
