My son is only 3 years old (almost) but when he gets to high school age, I'm going to have him here at school with me. It's a wonderful school and that way, I can work with his counselors to get the teachers I want and can work with him closely.
However, a member of my department has her son attending our school. He actually mostly loves it but if he knew the stories she tells us about him, he would be mortified.

I am right there with you! My 6 year old son is not happy with me right now because I made him capitalize the first word in a sentence. I'm usually tougher on him when it comes to homework and school. That's why I know I will never have my son in my class!

I feel that I really have to make the effort to be a mom, first. it seems like the 'teacher' always demonstrates herself no matter what.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I am in that category as well. My 6 yr old son does not like the idea that I have to supervise his home-work. He fusses quite a lot because he stated that I always have him to change or rewrite something.

I know what you are saying...also, since I am sub in my son's district, poor kid has to deal with friends having his mom as their teacher...

I'm a teacher too. I used to home school my children until 2004, did it for 4 years. Now I'm considering it again because the school system here is so terrible (not academically, but socially). My children like me to help them with their homework. But its probably because I taught them for years.

I sometimes think I am harder on my child because of what I see at school- both behavior and academics. I really have to work at not doing that and just being the mom. It does help though that my daughter is in a different school district than where I work. She is also at that age where she thinks I know nothing so ....

It is VERY difficult for the child and for the parent. My daughter even went to the same middle school where I taught and for most of her life she knew all her teachers by their first names. They were my friends. I wouldn't do it again! I also was the "teacher" and not the "parent" when helping with HW. However, she really didn't ask for MY help often. I wonder why! LOL

My 2 sons (7th and 4th grade) complain that their teachers quite often remind them that their mother is a teacher usually because of their behavior or the grade they just made ".....and YOUR mother is a teacher!!??" so they get it from both sides here too. I haven't come across any students of mine whose mom or dad was a teacher, but, when I do, I will do my best NOT to tell them that when I am disappointed in them.

Oh wow I know how this feels. It is so frustrating to me ecpecially during homework time. You just have to sit back and realize every child is different and your child IS NOT your student. Although using activities and fun things u teach your kids can come in handy when trying to show or do an activity with your child when trying to keep them busy

It is so hard not to cross that line!! Moms are moms and teachers are in school. However, I will ask my son if he would like a suggestion that I use at school. It gives him the option to either pick me "the mom" to help or me "the teacher" to help.

I'll never forget when my daughter was in third grade, and one night helping her with her homework, she told me "I don't want you to be my teacher. I just want you to be my mom." That opened my eyes and granted her wish. They already have a teacher(s) at school. And although mothers are always their child's teacher, they will only have ONE mother.
