I have a very hard problem! My 7 year old son is in 1st grade and is struggling with math to the point that he has given up even trying! I have no idea what to do. His school has a timed test too and he's so behind. I hate seeing him so frustrated and upset over math.
Any suggestions?

There are many on line math games that children can play and they are learning at the same time without even realizing it....google free math games and a plethora of them should pop up. I hope this helps...

Everything these previous moms have stated is it. Your child needs manipulatives in math to make it concrete. Some children do not get the abstract of it. If they are trying to teach 2nd grade concepts to a child who does not quite get 1st grade or Kinder concepts, you will start with the shut down and frustration.

What is he learning in school? How to add and subtract? Make it a game. Take out blocks or Legos and just lay them out. Here is 5 blocks and here are 4 more how many blocks are there? Let him count them. Do the same with subtraction. After a bit have him draw it out on paper, then move up to adding the numbers in and number sentences. Good luck.

Do everything practically! ie learn weight by baking. Play games cards is a good one for learning numbers. Keep it fun and don't stress :)
