I would love to join your group. My daughter and her 12 and 14 year old have some issues and special needs. Also my 35 year old pregnant daughter just found out that she is carrying a down syndrome child and in MT we don't have a team to be there when she is born. Tests down in the first 10 min to 1 hour can eleviate a lot of conditions. I need to find a place to move to that is very affordable, family oriented, have lots of low income programs for us all. I just found out I have breast cancer, but no big thing caught it early. Hope you let me join.

I too would love to join! I am a teacher of the Blind and Vision Impaired for Columbia Regional Programs in Portland,Oregon. I have adopted four girls with special needs twins who are now 22 years old who have Cerebral Palsy and are legally blind, a now 16 year old with Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous Syndrome and her now 14 year old sister who has ADD and some medical issues left over from being a preemie drug baby. I have been pretty active on the website in the past, then slowed down when my daughter was diagnosed with CFC and got into their chat group. I think this will be a great group to have discussions with and really look forward to it.

I have two daughters who are in their 20's now and have had a severe to profound hearing loss since birth. I would be happy to share our experiences (mostly successes!) with parents who have a child with the same type of hearing loss.

I'm a teacher of students with special needs as well. I have been teaching in a very rural school in NW IN for 9 years now and in that time have had 4 kids of my own two of which have special needs. I've read through everyone's comments and I agree with the analysis on RTI. As far as insight into Aspergers goes, start going to state and district conferences and invite the parents of that child. The students who have that disability who I work with suffer mostly from the lack of interacting appropriately with peers. Their peers mostly don't have much tolerance of them because of their differences as well. You need to talk to the parents and get their permission to share with the other kids in the class the uniqueness of this child and make them understand why there are differences in social interactions and academic ability. Once the peers understand where the child is coming from they are much more accepting. Make them a part of this child's education but be careful not to burden them. You could ask them to take part in this child's behavior plan or when the child earns their rewards for being good, then the entire class gets rewarded, that goes a long way. The other children are much more willing to help when there's something positive in it for them too. They especially don't understand how the child with autism or aspergers is so good at or almost genius in some areas but are behind them in other areas, esp social interactions. The other kids need to be taught how to interact appropriately with this special child in order for this child to have success socially. Hope that helps....I'll go try to join now.

Hi All
I've been teaching special needs kids for the past 13 yrs (in Cape Town, S.A.) & they still a blessing to me.
Glad to see there's so many of us. Keep up the GOOD TEACHING GALS.

Shireen

ps; I've been using a soft -ware programme called CAMI. It works wonders and the kids love the pop ups too, which keeps there attention. There name appears all the time as well, which they love. This programme allows you to work on any level aswell as from perceptual, Reading and Maths.... so many to mention. 1 thing I love is it gives you extra exercises if the child hadn't reached his goal yet.... which means less preparation for us. Hope this helps a little

I teach 2nd grade, but have special needs students occasionally that are mainstreamed. This year, I have one that has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Any advice for me, and his parents would be greatly appreciated by all of us.

Sadly, I had to retire after a being hit by a student (not one of my own) but in my heart I will always be a special needs teacher, I loved it. I taught here in NY for BOCES and then in my local school district a total of 20 years. I also have a special needs daughter and thanks to Special classes has led a really "normal" life.

I am a teacher of deafblind students and love every minute of my day. I couldn't imagine teaching in a regular classroom. It is their little advancements that are so huge. Do any other mothers out there teach deafblind? I used to teach Deaf students so I am fluent in ASL as well if this is an interest of anyone. Hope to chat soon!

I have a "special needs" daughter who is 27 now so I have 27 years of experience with kids with dissabilities. I also am a para-in a special needs classroom. I wasn't sure if I wanted to work with special needs kids because I thought I would like the experience of teaching "normal" kids better. I found out there was a shortage of spe. ed. paras so my helper gene kicked in and I decided to apply for a para job and got several offers. I chose a kindergarten classroom and have not regretted it a bit. I felt a little selfish by not sharing my experience and knowledge about being a parent of a spe. needs child; but once I decided to go ahead and try it I have not been dissapointed. I learn new things every day and my experience has helped me sooooo much. My daughter has always had speech problems so my insight even helps me understand kids that are not very vocal or hard to understand. The patience that I achieved by dealing with my daughter has been a great asset for my job and I enjoy (almost) every minute of it. That is what I want for all students with special needs; to have a teacher who loves what they do and enjoys it as much as I do. I also work with other wonderful people who love what they do and we all work great together so it is a great environment and I look forward to going to school every day.
