I am currently an unemployed special education teacher who worked at a private non-profit organization for the past 14 years until I was laid off in May 2009! I've been going crazy since then and searching for jobs. I am also a single mother with two children (one isn't a child anymore, she's 20) and I have a 4 year old son. My daughter attends Plattsburg college and is home now for winter break.

Volunteer with Start Making A Reader Today. Get to know other folks sound like you need to get out of the house and one morning a week is not a ton of time to be away from your 4 year old. Find a Mom friend who can do child care for a few hours and get out and let people know you are a tutor for hire.

Teach reading and written language from your home. Advertise on your local T..V. Community billboard,Newspaper, Craigs list make a web page and a flyer telling folks about you and your teaching foundation, background. I know tons of parents who will pay to help their kids get individualized help. Ask local schools to post a flyer about you in the school office. Volunteer at the local elementary and get to know other SPED Teachers. The rest will follow.

I did call some districts about substitute teaching. One district said there list is closed and the other is sending me an application. A third district I left a message and no one has called me back. I also looked on line at OLAS, but there wasn't any sub jobs in my area. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried applying to be a sub in the district(s) of your choice? I know we are constantly struggling to find quality subs, and I assume it's the same by you. That way, you could choose what days you work and what days you don't. I teach full time and also do a side business that could help supplement or replace your income, and I could definitely help you with that or help you brainstorm other options. What a small world. My name is Linda and have been laid off of my teaching position as well. I have been teaching for 15 years in a private Christian School. I am also a single parent of two children. My youngest is going to be leaving in May for the Marines. I will keep you in my prayers. Please pray for me if you think of it. Our God is in control and He knows our every need. He will not forsake the righteous. Jesus prays for us and will supply our daily needs. Keep your eyes upon Him and stay in His Word, pray without ceasing and believe what is true.

I am so sorry about your situation and I hope you find something soon. If you post your city perhaps another mom could help you find some leads?
