Hi,

We have homeschooled for a year and a half now. We have been pleased with the progress and work the kids have done, but are planning to re-enter the PS (a different school) next fall for a couple reasons. One is they are both very social kids (esp. my daughter) and two is if they are not enrolled in a school they are not permitted to play sports(except for soccer) after they reach the junior high level. My son plays baseball, basketball and football and was devastated to find out that he could not play his favorite, football, last year since he was not a student. My daughter plays softball and soccer but LOVES to be around people! We are very involved in our church, but she still craves the social interaction she used to have at PS. We are part of a co-op group that meets once a month so that helps some withwhat.

I guess I'm just curious if there are others planning to do what I'm doing and how you feel about it. I kind of have mixed emotions about it.

Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts!

Mindy

My husband and I just found out in our area you have to be in the PS to play sports and we don't have other options so if they want to play sports they will have to be in the PS. We both agreed that they will do additional homeschooling at home if they go to PS and by Senoir year they have to take AP courses.

I actually don't live in Fl anymore, and who is your sister, Cocoa is my hometown!

My husband is military so I won't even need to follow any homeschool laws till we get to Augusta, Ga. That really stinks that there are no junior high sports available. I think that should be a priority honestly! Good luck with all!

Crystal,

They are currently in the available programs, but when they hit junior high there is not much to choose from.  The big one for Wade is football and there are NO other programs besides school affiliated ones....I know the laws are different for Florida than here in Ohio.  I have a sister that lives in Cocoa and she said that all that is available to homeschoolers there (she doesn't homeschool..she's a midwife).

My husband and I do our best to keep them physically active (we added a workout room to our garage) and Tom is teaching Wade jujitsu currently, but they still long for the contact with kids nearer their age..

Both of my kids are natural athletes and sports are kind of a big deal to them.  It's not the only reason they are going back..but it's a big factor.  If we could continue with the sports up through 12th grade and homeschool...that would be a different story.

I appreciate your input, be thankful that you have those opportunites available to you!

Are there no community football/baseball/basketball teams?

There were many of those in my home town, I'd look into the cities/counties available sports offerings.

That's what I plan on doing with my kids. I also plan on enrolling them in gymnastics (my daughter) and karate, or tae kwon do (my oldest son). Then I will teach them music theory and will get a tutor if they want to learn an instrument I don't know how to play.

I have thought about it but it's not a total re enter into the PS. Our school is trying to do a virutual school where I would get all the curriculum and if I want my son in any special class or certain subject then I can send him for that. It's kinda neat however I have been waiting to start this since Thanksgiving and I haven't heard from them. So maybe it's a blessing because I did find some great stuff to use with my son.
