How do I get my 5 year old son to love or even like reading? He is just starting out and at this point not a great reader but hates every moment of it. I have tried to make it fun, I give candy treats and play lots of games but the spark has not been lit yet. Any suggestions???

Read to him....If he likes fire trucks, get books on fire trucks...any kind of books. If he loves dinosaurs, get lots of things from the library on dinosaurs. Also, let him read comic books if he is interested in that. I let my son read anything that interested him. At first it was comic books. We even have Bible stories in comic book form. He loved Calvin and Hobbs...I was just happy he was reading. Now he is in fifth grade and loves to read. He reads anything he can get his hands on. He has excellent comprehension and spelling. We read to him all the time. Even after he could read on his own we read together. He'd read a paragraph and I'd read a paragraph. He loves to read plays and we both take different parts to read and we change our voices for the parts. At 5 I'd really concentrate on reading to him and pointing out things in the books. That will get his interest and make him want to read eventually on his own.

Try taking turns reading. Maybe you could read a book, then he could read a book, or every other page. "The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear" really got my youngest started. She just turned 8 yesterday and still loves books. I do have an 11 year old daughter that does Not like reading, but will read when she finds things that peak her interests.
