My son was born with no health problems. I'm worried that later on he will get the heart problem. His doctor said not to worry. That he would just check him out on his appointments every 2 months appointments like normal kids. How do I know what to look for and has any anyone else dealt with this? If so whats your story? My son is almost 2 months old.

The doctor ran the echocardiogram when my daughter was 2 days old. He said they run the test on all downsyndrome babies because the risk of heart defect. The echo showed my daughter had a hole in the heart and a defective valve. My daughter is 2 and just went threw her first open heart surgery five days ago. She seen a cardiologist every six months to make sure that the heart was doing ok until the doctors say she was big enough. Tommorrow we will be home and the doctors say this should be her only surgery she will need. Hope this helps. Did your doctor run the echo when your son was born?

If he has had an echo, and they didn't see anything, you can definitely stop worrying. My little girl was born with a complete AV canal defect and they found it when I was only 19 weeks pregnant. Trust in teh fact that you were just very lucky. My little one had to have two large holes repaired and a valce constructed in her heart at 11 weeks old, and you'd never know it a year later except for her scars.

She didn't have poor circulation before her surgery, though, amazingly. She did have feeding problems and used to grunt in her sleep, but all that went away as soon as she came out of anesthesia!

Hello, I'm new to this Circle of Moms thing but as all previous moms comments, we have something in common. My son who will be 3 in July, has DS, he doesn't have any heart issues but like you I worry constantly.....still! I try not to 'borrow' trouble but it's a normal mom thing........worry! Just take one day at a time, it's all we can do. You're going to be faced with many hurdles, don't let your worry become one of them.......easier said than done:)

I have a 5 year old daughter with DS and was born with a small hole in her heart, but it has closed on its own. She had a murmur, but it has went away also. Thankfully she has been a very healthy child. She has never been hospitalized. She has glasses and some allergy issues, but typically developed children have those too.

don't worry....be happy that he has no issues. My son was born in October and the heart tests where the first ones at Children's hosp. of Phil. (he did fail his hearing test at hospital though).
He passed his heart tests with flying colors...Thank the Lord! That a "ok" gave me the ability and strength to tackel the hearing issue and development. Don't fear what you don' t need to. Junior is going to need you to focus on getting him to walk and talk!
Good Luck and God Bless :)

Hi Emily, I have a daughter with DS that will turn 7 this June. The pediatrician at birth found my daughter had a murmur and I had to take her to a heart specialist. My daughter had 2 small holes in her heart, one was closed by catheter at age 9mths and the other will hopefully close on his own. There are some kids that have many health problems and some are luck they don't. My daughter has had problems with the mucus in her eyes and had 2 eye surgeries ,she has been in the hospital with pneumonia, had RSV viruse almost at 3yrs, had the nerve on her eye fixed with surgery, had her tonsils and adenoids removed, had tubes put in her ears to prevent recurring ear infections, she wears glasses and has asthma problems. But she is fine right now and she will start 2nd grade in the fall. You need to have him evaluated and start him with therapy, my daughter began her therapies at 2mths. I hope your son grows up healthy and don't worry I know of a little girl the same age as my daughter and she hasn't been in the hospital once.

Thanks! I will ask the doctor if he can have a echocardiogram done.

If they have done an echocardiogram and there are no holes, and they are going to monitor him, i think you're good. They saw all my son's heart defects (3) at birth, and he was very small (2 lbs 13 oz). I do not know of anyone who developed defects later on.

Hello! My story is a rarity in that my daughter was born with an ASD and VSD which we were told we needed to watch and go for an echo every six months. Then at 3.5 they told us her VSD had closed but her mitral valve was leaking and she needed OHS. That was exactly a year ago and she is doing fantastic. The thing is we went and got a second and third opinion and the other two cardios couldn't believe the first one didn't prepare us for thepossibility of surgery when we first saw him at six weeks. Has he had an echo. I would definitely get one and if he's all clear after that then i would relax. He's probably one of the 60% that has no problems whatsoever. But get the echo for sure. My typical son had a flow mumur when he was born and the doc said we could check again when he was a year old or get a echo and clear him forever which is of course what we did. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

my son did not have any indicators of a heart defect when i was pregnant with him. When he was born he did have 2 holes which were closed when he was 1. his problems did not develop after birth.

Honestly, I would say why worry over something that 1. has not happened and 2. you have no control over sweetie? My son was born with AV Canal Defect. He had open heart surgery at 4 months. And right now he is happy and healthy and I hope he stays that way. Lets say your child had been born "Typical" would you worry everyday about what may or may not happen? That would be such an emotional and mental burden for you. Let is go and just enjoy your child and the blessings that he brings you. Revel in your happiness and in your joy of him. Just watch him... but relax. If he has heart issues, his extremities will be constantly cold, or turn blue or purple. He generally will lose weight, or not gain weight. Lips may turn pale, blue, or purple. Eyes may have dark circles... and he will just overall not look healthy. Keep your appointments, but do not burden yourself or your doctor. If you are still concerned ask to be referred to a child cardiologist and have them check out your child for peace of mind.

Hope this helps...

I hope for you that all goes well and you never face the heart problems, however we were told for 3 years that Lucy had only a tiny ASD that would close on it's own or even if it didn't that they would never have to fix it. I was told it was no big deal and not to worry or listen to the other doctors that would worry about it. Well this year we found out that she actually has 2 defects (both of which have been there from birth) and 1 may have to have surgery to be fixed. So, I encourage you to keep on top of the doctors and possibly get a second opinion. try to encourage them to do echos more often. ( you do have a cardiologist right?) Don't hesitate to let me know if I can help at all. I'll be keeping you guys in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us posted.

As a Mom of an almost 3yr old with no heart problems, I would say not to worry (tho if you get a post from someone who's kid has later developed problems then listen to them!) There are so many things that you may have to worry about, try not to add extra stress. I'm sure with regular check ups anything will be picked up before it's urgent :-)
