Hi moms!

My maternity leave ends in August and I will have to go back to work. The only problem is that I work an hour away from where I live. It is a lot of commuting and i will have no way of getting home in the middle of the day if she gets sick. I'm really confused on what to do as daycare is already really expensive and my commuting costs over $300.00 a month. I kind of wonder if there is even a point to go back to work.

I guess I just want to know if any working moms decided to stay home after there maternity leave was up and if it was for the better. It is a big decision for me as I have always worked but I really don't know if going back to work is the right choice.

Thanks.

Thanks for your response. I have to take a train in everyday and even just waiting for the train is 1/2 hour I really have to put 3 hours aside a day for traveling. I work at a law firm and there are really only jobs out in Vancouver so if I chose to work closer to home I would have to think about doing something else for a couple of years. I was thinking about taking a part-time night job to help with the bills, but I am also afraid that if I take some years off of work I will pretty much lose what I have already learned in my career as I have only been doing it for two years.

I'm glad to hear that other mothers out there think about the work situation as well. I thought I was being to worrisome.

Lots of people have decided not to return to work after maternity leave. I actually did the opposite, I had every intention of staying home but ended up returning full time when my oldest was 19 mos- but actually began taking cases again when she was 5 months. I think in your situation the commute is going to make it much more difficult as you'll automatically have to add 2 hours per day onto your typical work day. If you can afford to stay home, I would- atleast for the first year or two. After that you might be ready to get back into your career. I stayed home for 2 years with my youngest and don't regret it but I am loving my job, I think I would have been resentful and overwhelmed if I had tried to go back earlier.
