Does anyone have any suggestion on potty traing a 3 1/2 year old girl? I have tried everything. Once in awhile she may go, but most of the time she yells and has a tantrum! She is suspose to start school in September, but I'm starting to think that she won't be able to go.

I own a childcare center that enrolls children until the age of 3, in my area preschool starts at 3 and a lot of the require the children to be potty trained. I personally do not like rushing it, but I am going to share with you what we do at my center. We ask that all parents bring in lots of underwear and clothes for their children. We have the children in the underwear and after a few accidents they start understanding what it feels like to be wet and what it feels like to have to go to the bathroom. All of the children in my center have been potty trained before they left at the age of 3. So, my advice it to just put her in undies and see where that goes. Do not punish for accidents because that will cause them to be afraid. Just make sure that you tell her how much of a big girl she is when she uses it!

My daughter was almost the same age when she was potty trained. Try a sticker chart, or the candy. I also put her in panties during the day and if she had an accident she would have to help clean her panties and the floor. This was the most effective because she hated cleaning the mess up! Another really important thing to do is relax yourself and don't be pushy. Potting is all about being independent and if you push too hard she will just resist more. Make it fun and she will do it when she is ready. Do pull ups at night until she has several dry nights, then try with panties.

Hi Jacky,

As you already know, its all about persevering and patience, lots of it! Keep her in a panty all day and night. Every hour on the hour put her on the toilet and be firm in letting her know that she must stay there without getting off. Do this every hour for 20mins until she does something. Fetch yourself a cushion an sit onthe floor outside the door and sing songs, ask her colours, anything that comes to mind whilst she is sitting there. She will be pre-occupied with other things that she wont even know when she is doing it! When she does it, make a lot of noise, clap hands praise her as if you were having a party! Minimise juices and stop all drinking at 5, put her in bed at 7pm with one sip of milk- no more! Dont put her in a nappy at bed time, this gives her permission to make doodles in it, dont tempt her. Make a big deal about her going to bed in a panty like a big girl and keep praising. Set your alarm for midnight, wake her up and put her on the toilet and wait for 20mins. As soon as she wakes, she will realise that she wants to wee. You will only have to do this for about two weeks, she will then realise she can get up on her own. So what if she wets her bed a couple of times, you are still standing your ground with the pantys and you wont give her a nappy! If you catch her wetting her bed, put her straight on the toilet again even if she doesnt need to go again. She will soon realise its boring to be there and will then give in. make it CLEAR that its naughty to wet the bed when she does. In the day, if she wets her panty, let her walk around in it for a little while, she will soon realise that she doesnt want to do that anymore, its too uncomfortable! i hope this is helpfull to you. Let me know about the progress.

OH Mama.... this is the BEST time for you to do potty training (spring/summer). You're so fortunate to a have a little girl too! Try putting her in a sundress or just a shirt and let her play "bottom half naked" when she feels the urge to potty or it starts to trickle down her leg have a potty available near by to go in. If you have carpet I'm sorry. But it's really simple if you have hardwood or a nice little yard area. And reward her with a special treat ;)

I have tried the toilet, but she usually says she wants the potty. She will go for a few days without a problem. A few accidents no more than a couple times a day, than sge goes right back to refusing.

Maybe she is telling you in her own way that she wants to go to the big loo. Have you tried the toilet?

I've tried the stickers, and the candy. It didn't work for us. Usually, she will take a tantrum, when it come to the potty. Is there any way I can get her to let someone else take her to the potty, in case I'm not here?
