Hi there, I'm a 23 year old from Australia who turned vegan over three years ago and hasn't looked back. I have a wonderful healthy 3 month old boy who is exclusively breastfed.
Hubby is vegetarian 'only to appease me' (though he admits he feels great and never ate much meat nor liked it) I just choose not to kiss him with carcass-breath. He's very anti-vegan and we're having the age-old battle over bubs' solid menu.
Hubby wants him to be vegetarian for his social sake (to feel included and not singled out at parties and sleepovers) and I want him to be vegan as I find it very unnatural to consume cow milk (which I'm allergic to anyway) and eggs etc.. Until he can wisely choose (know where it comes from and what happens to it) for himself.
I plan to breastfeed for at least 12 months but am scared of and sickened by the thought of bubs eating dairy/eggs and slobbering it over me.
Has anyone else experienced this? It's bad enough arguing with relatives and friends who say he needs steak or that his body will just crave meat (arrrgh!) and listening to the doctors go on about this B12 and 'you need a mass amount of calcium and iron supplements' crap, but to face it in my own home with the father of my child who's beliefs I respect... but oppose..
Any ideas? Am I not alone?

I'm a vegan too and planning on raising my daughter that way also. My husband tried being a vegetarian but does eat meat occasionally when I'm not around >:{ (we've had many arguements over that one lol.) Anyways I ended up negociating with him on certain things, but what really got him to approve of it was when he did some research on it and came across this web site and saw that it was in HER best interest health wise to be vegan.

I really recommend this site, it helped me out in convincing a few people on my decision, and I haven't had any debates about it since ;) good luck!

Get him to watch "A Diet For All Reasons" by Dr Klaper - you can get it for just $10 from the Aussie Vegetarian Assoc. (I think the QLD Veg assoc is easier to find on the internet & they are one & the same). After that talk about what he wants for his child health wise etc etc. It's quite a life changing video by a medical doctor.

With regard to 'fitting in' - it's really no big deal these days. The rise in allergies has made other mothers & kids very aware of not giving food to other children without asking & it's common for a child to come for a sleep over with their own food for either religious reasons (halal) or allergies. My sons best friend has coeliacs & brings his own meals & snacks. I also make an effort to bake something gluten free & cook gluten free dinners. He usually brings his own breakfast & rice milk (cause we use soy & he's allergic to that too). There are kids with peanut allergy etc. Everybody is so aware these days that it's not something that will exclude your child.

He will get challenged by adults though (usually teachers) who find your diet choice a personal afront. My daughter (16yrs) has had a few teachers try to 'talk her out of it' if you can believe that. We do live in Bega (you know, as in THE cheese) so being dairy free is quite heretic down here! LOL

But, anyway, what I'm waffling on about is that, these days it's quite accepted by other kids and parents.

Oh, & my kid's lunches are the most popular at school. As you know being vegan means cooking nearly everything yourself & although all that packaged crap is popular I think kids crave homemade goodies. They are always told how lucky they are because they get mexican wraps, lebanese wraps, nori rolls, thermoses of dhal & naan bread & homemade muffins, cakes & slices. So there is a plus side!
