So I didn't even really make a concious choice to become a vegetarian, it just sort of gradually happened... As i started concentrating more on my health (excersising, eating right) I just have no cravings for meat whatsoever!! I do eat fish though. I just kinda realized like wow i think i'm almost a vegetarian lol. Now i just decided that i'm never eating dairy products again because i see how badly the cows are abused and i am not a baby cow!! But i hear bad things about soy. Does anyone have any suggestions of ways around Dairy AND Soy?? And is it fair to take my children's cheese and yogurt away from them??? I've decided to buy my kids the organic plain yogurt and put fruit in it, but other than that i will keep giving them their milk and cheese because they like it, even tho i don't like it... i would LOVE any advice, help, suggestions, critisism, please i'm new at this and i want what's best for my kids!!! :D

Here's my quick list: You might want to take a sublingual b12 suppliment or get a shot, depending on how much fish and eggs you consume. Be aware of which fish have higher mercury levels and watch your consumption. If you want alternatives for omega-3s walnuts, milled flaxseed, flaxseed oil, olive oil and Earth Balance buttery spread can be your new friends. For protein eat plenty of beans, nuts, nut butters, seeds (especially raw unsalted like pumpkin which also is a good source of magnesium), peas, lentils, and whole grains such as quiona. I do eat edamame and tofu, just not a lot of processed soy "products". Drink calcium fortified OJ and "milks" (almond, rice, hemp, hazelnut). I also add almond milk to my smoothies for the calcium. Eat your dark leafy greens, READ UP: Read The China Study, Food as Medicine, any book on nutrition really, any popular health magazines (Women't Health, Natuaral Health, Vegetarian time, Veggie Life, Eat Clean, etc). Just make sure you know yours and your children's daily requirements and how to fullfill them with a plant-based diet.

I have a local farm that bottle its own milk. All free range, all natural, from well cared for, almost spoiled cows. I pay about 4 times as much for it, but I love my dairy. and in a sense I am voting with my dollars opting to buy something better. you could check to see if there are an local farms in your area that produce organic milk.

All things cruelty free in moderation is my motto. so, we do eat some soy, Wildwood or Silk soy yogurt but there are other options. coconut, http://ow.ly/3xMLd , or rice products. And Daiya http://www.daiyafoods.com/index.html is a soy /dairy free cheese product that is excellent. Here is my husbands blog with some ideas and recipes and links to other good vegan blogs. We do a mix of fresh fruits and veggies whole grains and quick and easy processed foods.

In my opinion soy seems to be less harmful than a diet of dairy and meat considering the heart disease running rampant in this country which can be prevented in most cases by diet.

I'm not a huge fan of soy, and yes, I've heard things as well, but we drink rice milk (which I LOVE). I give my son yogurt for now because I can't find a tasty vegan yogurt, but I try my best to do all organic and cruelty free for us as a family and for him.
It is a very gradual process of switching, I still am, since it seems everything out there has milk ingredients in it, so it's tough! But easiest way would be to buy cookbooks or look online, there are tons of websites. Initially it's expensive because you have to load up on spices and seasonings, but after that, it's pretty much the same cost.
They have vegan alternatives to mostly everything, and ways to make vegan versions of everything too. I've found that vegam margarine is better, rice milk, and soy cheese cooked with food, but alone is bland.

Best advice: Experiment! Try different brands and recipes and see what you and your family like!
