My daughter just turned 1 (Dec 26) and at her 1 yr check up i asked her doctor about switching her to soy milk (silk) instead of soy formula cuz babies her age are drinking homo milk (YUCK!) The doc said she can't drink soy milk and must stay on her soy formula till she's two!! Does anyone has any advice for this? thanks in advance!

I think some people who responded are getting confused. She asked about giving soymilk INSTEAD of formula from ages 1-2. I definitely wouldn't do that. I would stick to the formula since you are not breastfeeding. The soymilk is just a supplement you can use for smoothies, cereal and such.

My baby boy (5 yold!) has been drinking soy milk since he was 1 years old. no problems. I breastfed him for a year prior, then went right to soy milk.

Our son was breastfed, so when he weaned himself at 8 months, we started giving him soy formula, but only until 11 months, then it was soy milk. A lot of people tell us that he needs fat and other nutrients and we're not giving him enough, because we hardly eat any sweets or fatty foods. But I know what's in the foods that he eats (mostly fresh fruits and veggies), and they're full of all the healthy fats and things that he needs.

We started feeding him soy milk after his one year check up. He loves it, has lots of energy, is as healthy as can be. I thankfully have a vegetarian pediatrician for Christopher, and she said as long as he gets all his other nutrients, it's fine.

I've been giving my son soymilk since he was about one, along with hemp milk. I don't rely on either, I make sure he's eating for nutrition rather than drinking for it. I just consider the soy and hemp an added bonus. In my opinion, it doesn't matter where the fat or protein is coming from as long as he is getting it, and he is. That's just my thought though.

I breastfeed so I have no idea but I would say that if the World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding until the child is 2 it would follow that you would give fortified breatmilk substitutes until the child was 2. IYKWIM?

I guess I've read different books than some of the other posters here. My son started drinking soy milk (original silk brand) when he was 1. My doctor said it was fine and he's been doing great (he's 2 and 3 months now). Soy milk (at least the kind we get) has the same fat content as 2% cow's milk. Also, if you're concerned about getting enough fat you can start to introduce foods like avocados and olives (small pieces) which provide lots of healthy fats.

We kept our daughter on soy formula for her second year of life. She is now drinking DHA fortified Silk as of yesterday! (So glad not to be buying formula now). Regular soymilk doesn't have enough fat for a one year old, so that's why they recommend formula. You can find out more by reading Becoming Vegan, a great book on vegan nutrition.

There is more fat in whole milk then soymilk. He may be concerened that she won't get enough nutrition from the soymilk. The formula is fortified to have everything cow's milk based formula's do. I like to check with the American Academy of Pediatrics, if I have any questions. You can always ask her dr. to explain why.
