Hi.
My husband and I have been vegetarian for almost three years now and loving it! Now, we have a 10 month old boy who we want to raise to be vegetarian. So far, our lo has gone from drinking breast milk, to soy formula, and now he's on cow's formula. My husband and I drink soy milk.
So... my question is, what do we give our baby once he's a year old? Everyone I've talked to keeps insisting that he has to drink whole milk... But, why? First of all, he's already a very big baby. I don't see why 2% milk would be such a bad thing (if we were to give him cow's milk at all). Secondly, could soy milk be just as good, if not a better option?

My 3 kiddos (5,8,10 yold) have been vegan since tummyhood. I have been a vegan for 11 years. My first baby, I gave him almond milk right after breastfeeding (until he was a year old). I would put a handful of almonds, drop of honey, cup of water in the blender, and blend. then strain. (adjust the amounts according to how much you want to make). Now, I make a "milk" shake with raw almonds, dates, frozen bananas, water. ALmonds are great for calcium.

My baby boy (5), loves soy milk. Gave him soy milk right after he was done breastfeeding (for a year). All my kids drink soy milk. I try to buy Organic Silk. You can buy Almond Milk too.

The reason against cow's milk is that it can cause ear infections in toddlers. It seems that some kids can handle it when they are older, after the body has had a chance to make the antibodies for the digestion of milk protein.
