Hi everyone!!! Please tell me about your experiences and if your diabetes went away after delivery. I am currently going through testing to see if I now have diabetes and my youngest is 6. They say it is a precurser to type 2 diabetes.

hey guys, i had gestational diabetes with my pregnancy... my mum has had type 2 for my whole life and dont kno wen she was diagnosed, my bro got diagnosed last yr with type 2 but his was all diet controlled and fine now. my test showed up slightly high n was diet controlled for a week....but the levels wouldnt go down so i was told 2 go on insulin.. i pretty much had a massive panic attack coz i am soooo scared of needles, and wasnt allowed to leave the place until they saw thati could manage doing insulin on my own.. so i had 4 needles a day n hated it. i only did it for like 3 weeks, coz i got induced 2 weeks early. i gained no weight during my 3rd trimester. my question to you guys is: wen i started insulin i was told if i get pregnant again i will have the GTT alot earlier and if i need insulin to start that earlier too. i was wondering if it is selfish of me 2 not want another kid?

ive been told by almost everyone that single childs are "bad" they get spoilt n r pretty much little shits, but i dont think its that i think its the way they r brought up.... so every1 is pressuring me in2 having another kid wen i definately dont want one (unless they find a cure 4 GDiabetes). Its just that no1 knew wat i was going through, i hated it, i cried alot of the times i had 2 give myself insulin bcoz i am terrified of needles (yes, i am STILL)

I kno its very selfish of me, bcoz it would be nice 2 have more kids, but i had a dodgy labour 2, n ive even sed i would do the crappy labour again, i just dont like insulin.....

i don't think so the protein is cause from not having enough carbohydrate so your body starts burning muscle...

I am 35w2d pregnant and was diagnosed with GD in my 28th week while I was in the hospital on bedrest for preterm labor. I received steroid shots around 24 weeks for my baby's lungs, so they were a bit concerned about that affecting my results. My 1 hour test was just slightly over and I failed 2 out of 3 for my 3 hour. Both of those were slightly over as well. I have been able to eat regular foods, but can not over indulge. It is all diet controlled and no insulin needed.

I have 3 living children (though this is my 6th pg) and the first time I've had GD. I did have a trace of protein in my urine at last docs appt, so we will be watching that. Can dehydration cause the trace of protein?

Hey there, i had diabetes with my son, strange because i had none of the risk factors attached. i managed the diabetes through diet. there were times i just sat down and cried. i was hungry but felt i couldnt eat. my hubby was great support, counting down the weeks. all the scans i had showed a normal sized babe, although they never can be accurate. i was going to be booked in for an induced birth. but with at 37 1/2 weeks i went into labour, i live in a small town so had to travel to a hospital that could look after my needs 40 mins away. after almost 4 hours pushing i had an emergency c section. 20 hours after the first contraction my son was born. the diabetes went away after pregnancy. i cant say i have looked after my eating habits, i eat a lot of rubbish.I know with the next pregnancy i will have to be tested regularly to see if i get the diabetes again. i really hope i dont.

well the only wat to get a false positive is to have a lotion or something on your hands that may contain a type of sugar...for example one time i had butter milk lotion on my hands and when the nurse tested me i was like 205 but i knew that wasn't right so i cleaned my hands and did it again and i was 101...it can make a big difference, but if the blood was drawn then this wouldn't be a problem, also, stress can raise you blood sugar, but being sick itself really wouldn't cause to the shoot positive test, if you shot positive you do have it b/c your blood sugar is high and that is what being diabetic is, if you still feel like it is wrong, for the next week do a fasting blood sugar test on your own, when you get up clean your hands take your blood sugar before anything else, if it is always under 90 then you are normal and maybe you should ask again to be tested, if you had anything high in carbs the day before it does affect your blood sugar despite what they say.

For diabetic friendly recipes, ideas and more info on how to control the diabetes try www.dlife.com it is an excellent site. This is my second time with gestational diabetes and I remember from last time that you get sick of eating the same things.

I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes in May. My doctor had me meet with a diabetes specialist. She gave me a menu to follow, but I got to choose the foods to eat. This menu just had the max amount of carbs, protein, and fat i was allowed at each meal. It was actually very easy for me to follow. I also had some support because one of my co-workers was a diabetic. I didn't have much trouble adjusting my diet because it was very similar to my normal diet. The thing I did miss was having syrup and honey. Mine did go away after I had my daughter, but I am trying to become healthier since my risk for type II has increased.

Hi everyone, I too was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I'm still skeptical though. My first screening test for gestational diabetes came out to be near borderline. Then I had to go through the fasting and 3 hour gtt test. The thing is I was still sick with an upper respiratory infection when I went for the 3 hr gtt. Plus, my ENT working w my OB put me on AMoxil antibiotic. I didn't take my amoxil on the day of the test. I am still wondering if this affected my test results. Am more puzzled because I went for my ultrasound recently about 3 days ago and the techinician said my baby is about 4 lbs. Plus, I haven't really gained that much weight to begin with I used to be only 95 lbs and now I am 113 lbs (at 33 wks!). The thing is I've been sick with this upper respiratory infection for 3 weeks now. (I kept regressing due to a stressful job and this cold weather). So am wondering, would any of these things be causing false positive results bc when you're sick your glucose does tend to get higher. Does having a smaller stature and height mean you're more prone to having a false positive results in the gtt? What about diet before the test...I think I had a lot of carbs since (I'm asian and rice is always part of the meal)...sigh answers....I want answers....

I have had gestational diabetes 4 times.

The first time was in 2000/01 and it was diagnosed at 26 weeks and I had to go straight onto insulin. My daughter was born at 37 weeks weighing 8lb 7oz and both she and I had perfect blood sugar levels straight after her birth.

The second time was in 2002/03 and my blood sugars had been monitored strictly from the beginning of the pregnancy. It wasn't until I reached 29 weeks when they suddenly spiralled out of control and I was put on insulin again. I was hospitalised then and didn't leave hospital until my son was born at 36 weeks. I had polyhydramnios (6 extra litres of fluid) and my son weighed in at 13lb 2oz. My blood sugars went back to normal within hours of the birth, my son was in the neonatal unit for 26 hours until his stabilised.

The third time was in 2005 and I was on insulin from 9 weeks. Unfortunately, at 11 weeks I developed pneumonia and as a result my bub died. My blood sugars were back to normal within hours of the d & c.

The fourth time was in 2007/08 and I was again on insulin from 9 weeks. Unfortunately, by that time my high blood sugars combined with another bout of pneumonia and high fevers had done damage to my little girl and she was born with complex congenital heart disease. She was born at 39 weeks, weighed 9lb 8oz and was gorgeous! She had 4 open heart surgeries, the first at 3 days old and passed away at 9 days old.

That time, my blood sugars were perfect again straight after surgery, but 7 weeks later they went haywire! I have now been diagnosed with late onset type 1 diabetes which is a rare occurrance. I am on insulin injections every day and test my blood sugars constantly. My diet has become very strictly controlled as my body doesn't seem to tollerate more than a couple of different types of carbohydrates.

It's a complete change of lifestyle and really, I feel much better for it. Sure, it's restrictive but once you become used to what you can and can't have and have suffered after stupid indulgences, then it becomes almost habit to eat correctly.

It's not that bad in reality ...

I remember all that I had to change when I was pregnant. When you have your baby they will check his /her blood sugar. My daughter's dropped. I was also in labor for 18 hours before a c-section . They really monitor you both. I was @ Greenville Memorial Hosp. in Greenville SC

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes the day before Thanksgiving. I changed my diet immediately and have been doing great. I am however getting sick of turkey, cheese and almonds. I thought the dietician would make out a sample menu for me, but just gave me 2 sheets of what I can eat and how much is a serving. It has been hard to navigate, but am doing the best I can. I am dying for a simple bowl of grapenuts with raspberries. It really is the simple things. I have noticed in just a few weeks that sweets aren't that hard to stay away from, it's fruit I want to eat all the time now. It is only for a few more weeks. :-) And as long as my baby is healthy that's all I care about.

I would like to hear what other people ate or are eating. Thanks.
