DREAM WHIP VS HOMEMADE BUTTERCREAM ICING/FROSTING?

Hi,

I have just starting making my own cakes for my children's birthdays and decided to use Dream Whip for the first time for my son's 6th birthday cake. The cake came out great, but I'm not sure if the icing would have worked better (especially the piping part) if i had used buttercream instead. i guess it's just trial and error.

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is, whether they find one is better than the other. I found the dream whip good as all I had to do was put it in the beater and add the stabliser and it didn't taste as sugary, but at the same time, I know exactly what I have put into the buttercream icing when I make it from scratch.

Any views on this would be great!

Thanks :)

IMO why would you go through all of the work of baking and decorating your own cake if you are going to use box/canned ingredients. The best part of making a homemade cake is that you know and control exactly what is in it. There are MANY great frosting recipes out there that aren't overly sweet. You can make your own whipped cream frosting (great on a white cake filled with strawberries), cream cheese frosting (carrot or red velvet) butter cream, swiss merengue, itallian butter cream and SOOO many others. When you make them yourself you control how much sugar goes into the frosting.

I cant say for sure since I have not got around to make whipped frosting yet. I do love buttercream especially for piping. i like to make my own frostings. I will not buy store ready made frostings.

personally it's buttercream or nothing at all. for me, the cake is only the delivery mechanism for the frosting :) if you'd like good recipes (cake and frosting) and some REALLY neat pics of decorated cakes sure to inspire go to cakecentral.com .

Dream whip is like whipped cream that you make from a package - you can buy it usually near the pudding/mousse. If you are using dream whip, add a package of whip it to give it stability. I do cake decorating and find that dream whip/canned frosting will not hold up to most decorations (flowers/roses/piping) so I use the buttercream. My cake instructor taught me that adding a pinch of salt (a tiny bit only) will help to cut the sweetness of the buttercream. Hope that helps

In my opinion Buttercream takes the cake :)

I use a "homemade" version of the whipped cream frosting. You can pipe it, but it tends to crack. I use either buttercream or a piping frosting for decorations for a smoother look. The whipped cream frosting is great, especially under fondant, which tends to be sickly sweet. The only bad thing about the whipped cream frosting, is you can't make it ahead of time. You can frost the cake ahead of time, just don't try to save the extra frosting, it falls flat.

recipe for whipped cream frosting

2/3 c shortening (Crisco works best, I don't know why!)

1/3 c butter, softened

1 lb powdered sugar

1/4 c heavy whipping cream (make sure it is COLD)

1 tsp clear vanilla (you can use regular, but it tints the frosting a browninsh color)

Cream shortening and butter. Slowly add powdered sugar. Combine completely. Slowly add cream, and vanilla.

Can be colored, paste colors work the best.

Makes enough to frost one 9x13 cake. I usually double it.

I use a stand mixer to whip this frosting, my hand mixer won't handle it!
